AMSU, AMSTA engage in slugfest over players' selection

Imphal, March 24 2014: Sniffing possible foul play in the selection of players to represent the State in the 17th Junior National Sepak Takraw Championship to be held at Patna, Bihar from March 28-31, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has cautioned that if there was any wrongdoing in selection process, then All Manipur Sepak Takraw Association (AMSTA) should be held responsible for any eventuality.

Addressing a press meet in this regard at the union's head office here today, Laishram Reagan, general secretary of AMSU pointed out that a coaching camp was conducted at LKYDA Club, Laipham Khunou and 30 players were selected to represent the State.

But a rift cropped up between the coaches and selected players.

He stated that the players filed a complaint with AMSTA against the coaches Rakeshwor and Durjeet but the president of the association preferred to remain silent over the case thereby violating rights of the players.

He asserted that the authoritarian act of the coaches and association has caused mental disturbance among the players which is a setback not only for the players but also for the whole State.

Meanwhile, the team of All Manipur Sepak Takraw Association (AMSTA) is all set to leave Imphal on March 25 to participate in the championship ignoring the charges leveled against it by AMSU.

Speaking to media persons, T Ruhinikumar, secretary-in-charge of AMSTA said that the charges hurled by AMSU regarding the selection of players for the championship were unfounded and not legitimate and clarified that all the players were properly trained by the coaches and there had been not any ill treatment of the players during the camp.

Informing that an understanding was reached among the players, association and DESAM earlier, he further said that a total of 22 players including 10 men and 12 women, two coaches and two managers will be leaving Imphal to participate in the championship.

He said that secretary of AMSTA had also submitted a statement to AMSU in response to seeking a clarification over the matter by the students' body.
