NH-37 disconnected as road caved in at Noney

Imphal, June 18 2022: Multiple landslides in Senapati district cut off at least two villages Kangjang and Chakha from the rest of the region while the National Highway-37 remains cut off after a major portion of the road caved in between Khongsang and Irang in Noney district.

It is reported that many villages along Imphal Dimapur road have been disconnected as heavy rain triggered multiple landslides since the last few days.

The calamity has greatly distressed many people as their source of livelihood couldn't be continued and movement for other purposes have been hindered by the debris of the landslides.

Speaking to media persons who went to inspect the areas affected by landslides, Kangjang Village chairman K Paolin said that multiple landslides have been occurring in the two villages since the past 10 days or so.

Saying that the only road which connects Kangjang Village with the rest of the region have been blocked by boulders and debris of the landslides, the village chairman continued that the catastrophe has taken a toll on the people as they no longer could continue their business and meet the other needs.

He further stated that they have apprised the State Government but no initiatives have been taken so far to address the woes of the people.

He then urged the State Government to look into the matter and remove the debris at the earliest.

Meanwhile, massive landslides at numerous places washed away culverts along Imphal-Jiribam route completely and cut off the National Highway 37 on Saturday, leaving many travellers stranded along this lifeline for the people of Manipur.

However, no casualties or injuries have been reported from the incident.

The NH-37 remains cut off after a major portion of the road caved in between Khongsang and Irang in Noney district due to incessant rainfall over the last few days.

Vehicles plying between Nungba and Puiluan were stranded after the culvert at Chumla stream was washed away following a continuous downpour.

Another massive landslides has been reported from the Old Cachar Road near Joujangtek, Bwanruang Taodaijang and Kotlen between Imphal and Noney.

Reportedly, debris at Joujangtek have been cleared while the boulders at Bwanruang will likely be removed tomorrow using heavy machinery.

With the intervention of local MLA and HAC chairman Dinganglung (Dipu) Gangmei, clearing of roads has now started along the affected highway.

Many heavy trucks coming from Jiribam are stranded at Tamenglong with numerous landslides reported along the highway.

Officials said the affected road between Tamenglong and Imphal is expected to clear by Sunday through the old Cachar road.
