Imphal, July 17 2024:
When Manipur is already facing shortage of cooking gas, the supply of the LPG and petroleum may be further choked by possible closure of the National Highway 37 (Imphal-Jiribam) for road maintenance.
Sources said the Highway may be closed for at least 7 days for reconstruction and maintenance.
The condition of the road has deteriorated, especially due to rainfall.
It may require the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) at least 7 days to repair the road, said the sources.
The NHIDCL under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is overseeing the Highway.

If the road is shut for 7 days for maintenance, it will restrict movement of tank trucks and trucks, and halt transportation of all materials, essential and non essential including LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and POL (Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants) .
No information has been received from the NHIDCL on this matter yet.
Meanwhile, amid shortage of LPG due to thin supply, many LPG distributors have complained that some distributors are receiving supply of packed cylinders daily and they may be selling them here in Imphal outside of their respective selling points.
They have accused one distributor from Ukhrul of selling the packed cylinders in Imphal.
Earlier, the distribution was done in a fair manner and all distributors irrespective of their size get equal numbers of packed cylinders.
However, yesterday, some large distributors were given packed cylinders in loads, they said.
They have approached the IOCL at Imphal but their grievances have not been addressed, they said.
Meanwhile, a report received late in the evening said the Consortium of Manipur Petroleum Product Transporter Fraternity has written a letter to the Prime Minister.
Sent via mail and speed post, the letter of the Consortium of Manipur Petroleum Product Transporter Fraternity highlighted the challenges including extortion, transporters are facing on the Highways.
It urged the PM to stop the extortion from LPG and POL tankers on the Imphal-Jiribam road and improve the Highway.
