Imphal, May 10 2013 : Taking serious note of the involvement of policemen in drug smuggling in which 12 cops have been arrested, the Cabinet which met today evening has decided to hand over the case to the CBI.

The decision of the Cabinet follows the seizure of a huge consignment of drugs at Pallel on April 28 from 11 police men.

Following this the OC of Moreh commandos was also arrested and he along with the others have been remanded to police custody for further investigation.

Addressing newsmen after the Cabinet meeting today, Government spokesperson M Okendra said that the Government has taken a serious view of the involvement of police personnel in drug smuggling and added that a decision has been taken to hand over the case to the CBI.

To underline his point, Oken said that the Cabinet has also decided to introduce a Bill in the forthcoming Budget session of the Assembly, wherein stringent action can be initiated against drug owners.

Though the Assembly is yet to be summoned, the Cabinet has decided to convene the Budget session from June 10 .

Once the Bill is passed then the State Government will be empowered to seize or attach the properties of the drug owners and even their kins.

Towards this end, the Centre would be approached to allow the State pass a stringent law against drug owners as well as drug peddlers as Manipur is a transit route for drug smuggling, he added.

The other important agenda discussed during today's Cabinet meeting was the remuneration of Part Time Lecturers and Guest Lecturers.

Informing that there are 355 Part Time Lecturers who have fulfilled the UGC laid down norms and criteria, Oken said that the pay of these part timers will be raised to Rs 21,600 per month from the current Rs 8000 per month.

There are 53 Guest Lecturers, he said and added that their pay too will be increased from the current Rs 8000 per month to Rs 21,600 per month.

The other class of Part Time Lecturers, numbering 76 will see their pay raised from the current Rs 4500 per month to Rs 12,600 per month, he added.

Pay for VDFs, numbering 10,500 will also be increased from the present Rs 4500 per month (including ration money) to Rs 5,500 per month, he said.

The Cabinet has also agreed to amend the recruitment rules of Junior MCS officers and Manipur Forest Service officers.
