Imphal, February 08 2010: Two water supply schemes constructed with the funds from the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resourses (NLCPR) through the Union ministry of Development of North East Region (DoNER), one at Kangapokpi and another Maram were inaugurated and handed over to the people today by the state PHED minister, TN Haokip.

The water supply scheme at Kangpokpi was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2.12 crore while at of Maram at an estimated cost of Rs 3.65 crore.

The water supply scheme at Kangpokpi will benefitted to the residents of Kangpokp and Kanglatombi area while the Maram water supply will supply safe drinking water to the surrounding village of Maram like Lairouching, Makha Makhan, Maram Bazar, Maram Ramlong, Maram Centre, New Maram, Maram Kabanam, Maram Sangonban, Maram Kangbinam and Chrisitian Colony etc.

The inauguration function of the water supply schemes was attended by former minister, Francis Ngakjokpa, MLA Thangminlien Kipgen, MLA K Raina and officials of the state PHED and leaders of the villages of the surrounding areas of the scheme.

After inaugurating the schemes, PHED minister handed over the management of the schemes to the local committees formed by the authority.

Speaking on the occasion, PHED minister expressed that as the schemes have been handed over to the local committees, the maintenance of the same will be the sole responsibilities of the committees.

The committees entrusted will be responsible for the collection of tax, appointment of chawkidars, linemen etc.

but repairing of the schemes by natural calamities will be responsible for the government, he added.

Speaking further on the occasion, the minister said government is planning to draft a comprehensive plant to revived lost forest stokes of the state with the objective of long retention of the rain water to the grounds.

The global warming which becomes a matter of concern is the result of mass scale deforestation.

For long lasting of the water supply schemes inaugurated today also depend on the ground water retention capacity of the area which in turn related with the forest stoke of the area, he said appealing to the villagers to help in the replenish of the forest stoke in the area.

MLA, K Raina and former minister Francis Ngakjokpa also while observing that water is a precious natural gift for human live, appealed the people to extend all possible cooperation in successful running of the schemes to the local committees.

Officials of the PHED minister including the Chief Engineer S Imomacha also urged the surrounding villagers of the scheme to help in long lasting of the schemes by preventing mass scale felling down of trees, jhum cultivation in the surrounding of the schemes.
