Imphal, December 05 2009: The recruitment process for Assistant Professors or Lecturers in Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) by conducting DPC against the Cabinet decision to absorb maximum number of JN Hospital doctors in JNIMS on deputation has irked many JN Hospital doctors.

Notably, the Chief Minister is the chairman of the JNIMS governing council.

Recalling that RIMS was once a general hospital before it amalgamated with regional medical college, some senior doctors of JN Hospital asserted that doctors eligible under MCI rules were absorbed in RIMS at the time of amalgamation.

"Then what is the problem now ? Why is the authority refusing to absorb eligible doctors of JN Hospital in JNIMS ?", they asked.

Questioning the commitment of the State Government to absorb senior doctors of JN Hospital in JNIMS, they asked if there was any contradiction between the Government and the JNIMS Director on the matter.

The JN Hospital doctors further pointed out that when Safdarjung Hospital of Delhi was amalgamated with a medical college, doctors working in the hospital for 18 years after completion of PG were taken as having teaching experience of nine years and thus the Medical Council of India allowed their appointment as Professor in the medical college.

In the same line, doctors working for 14 years after PG were taken as having teaching experience of seven years and they were absorbed as Associate Professors.

If the same rule is applied, there are many State Government doctors qualified for appointment as Professors and Associate Professors, they asserted.

JN Hospital doctors maintained that there is still shortage of Professors and Associate Professors in JNIMS.

Talking to The Sangai Express, a member of the Medical Council of India said that doctors working for 18 years after completion of PG may be given the post Professor.

Under the same principle, doctors who have worked for 10 years may be assigned the post of Associate Professor.

The MCI has definite rules in this regard, he said.

However, when asked if the same rules can be applied in the amalgamation of JN Hospital and JNIMS, the MCI member said it needed verification whether the rules were generalised or case specific.

The MCI member further hinted at the importance of approaching the MCI with an appeal to apply those rules during amalgamation of JN Hospital and JNIMS.
