Imphal, August 03 2025:
Health Services Director Dr Chambo Gonmei has asserted that the hospitals in Manipur are not inferior to hospitals located outside the State in any manner.
The Health Director was speaking at the first foundation day of Babina Hospital held today at Sangai Hall, Hotel Imphal here.
Dr Chambo Gonmei called upon all the hospitals and healthcare providers of Manipur to work harder to further advance the healthcare services being provided in the State.
Highlighting the role and contributions of Babina Hospital in the healthcare sector of Manipur, he said that Babina Hospital has been providing healthcare services to not only the people of Manipur but also people of many other States.
Acknowledging the consistent struggle of Babina Hospital Managing Director Dr Th Dhaballi to establish cutting-edge health care facilities in the State, Dr Chambo Gonmei remarked that Dr Dhaballi has realised his dream.
He hailed Dr Dhaballi as a man who is dedicated to the service of humanity.
Manipur is the foremost State in the whole North East region in terms of organ and tissue transplant, he said.
Dr Dhaballi who is also the Chairman of Babina Group of Companies said that Babina Hospital is now able to establish itself as a successful hospital even though it is just one year old.
"Babina Diagnostics was specializing only in diagnostics 20/30 years back.
In the meantime, many friends and well wishers asked me whether I should be content with the Babina Diagnostics or I have any intention to set up a hospital.
"For many years, I restricted my enterprise to Babina Diagnostics.
However, considering the huge expenditures made by cancer patients in going to other States for treatment, I felt the need to establish a hospital in Manipur where comprehensive cancer treatment facilities are available", Dr Dhaballi said.
Subsequently, Babina Cancer Hospital was set up at Imphal as a joint venture with the American Oncology Institute, he said.
In the course of treatment of cancer, doctors (cancer specialists) came upon many patients with heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, lung problems etc.
As such, they needed to consult different specialists but Babina Cancer Hospital does not have such specialists.
To address this issue, Babina Multispeciality Hospital where several specialists are available was set up on August 4, 2024, he said.
Over the past one year, Babina Hospital has evolved into a successful hospital where comprehensive treatment facilities are available, he said.
On the average, 90 patients undergo dialysis at Babina Hospital day and night.
Considering the plight of patients who need dialysis and come from far off places, plans are afoot to build a new dialysis block so that dialysis can be done only during day time, Dr Dhaballi said.
Kidney transplant surgery can be done successfully at Babina Hospital.
Whereas it costs around Rs 20 lakh to 25 lakh for a patient to undergo kidney transplant outside the State, Babina Hospital performed a successful kidney transplant surgery on August 2, 2025 and it costs just around Rs 6.50 lakh, he said.
Saying that the kidney transplant surgery was not introduced at Babina Hospital with the sole motive of earning money, the Babina Hospital Managing Director said that the kidney transplant surgery was introduced to save lives at minimal costs.
He also sought help from the Government in performing kidney transplant surgeries at Babina Hospital, specially when relatives of patients or donors come forward lawfully to donate kidneys.
Dr Dhaballi further called upon all doctors and staff of Babina Hospital to work with dedication and sincerity, and live up to the trust of the people.
He said that several welfare schemes are being taken up for the hospital's staff.
Babina Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Shyamkumar Laishram graced the function as guest of honour where awards were distributed to dedicated staff of the hospital.
