NPP will emerge as single largest party : Conrad Sangma
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, February 03 2022: National People's Party (NPP) National president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has categorically claimed that NPP would emerge as the single largest party in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election.

Conrad Sangma arrived here today to campaign for his party.

Speaking at a reception function held at Mayol Hall, Iroishemba today where some intending candidates who joined the party recently were felicitated, Conrad Sangma claimed that NPP is a National political party which is growing fast not only in the North East region but also across the country.

The forthcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly election would be a stepping stone for NPP's victory in the Assembly elections of other North Eastern States and Lok Sabha elections which would be held later.

He reiterated that NPP would bag the maximum number of seats among all the political parties.

He said that this is the fifth election for which he has come to Manipur for campaigning.

He said that his current four-day visit reminds him of his first visit to Manipur in 2002 when he accompanied his late father PA Sangma.

Only Y Joykumar and a handful of his supporters joined NPP in 2017 where they were accorded a warm reception at the same venue as today's, said the NPP president.

"NPP was then struggling to form a base in Manipur.

But today we are fortunate to receive nine intending candidates inside the fully packed hall", he continued.

Notably NPP was established at a meeting held at the Brajamohan Dev Sharma Mandap on January 13, 1989 .

"I feel gratified to see that NPP which was established in Manipur has succeeded in securing its rightful place in its home State as a National political party," Conrad Sangma remarked.

It is a clear testimony of the massive support extended by the people of Manipur to NPP and its growing popularity across the country, he continued.

There are eight National political parties in the country and NPP is the only one among them which has its roots in the North East region.

This is indeed a unique identity of NPP, he claimed.

NPP has been fighting and protesting when any issue crops up which impinges upon the interest of North East people.

Even though there are numerous communities in the region, there are also many common issues, said the NPP leader.

He said that the NPP would always stand and fight for the people of North East.

Unlike other National political parties, there is no culture of high command in NPP and decisions taken at Delhi are not final, he said.

Allotment of party tickets and enactment of policies are done in consultation with party leaders of the respective States, Conrad Sangma continued.

Because of such unique characteristics of NPP, more and more people of Manipur and other North Eastern States have started supporting the party, he said.

Conrad Sangma said that NPP has a vision of transforming the North East region as a region of prosperity and rapid development.

"We believe that this vision would be realised but in order to realise this vision we must stand and work together.

NPP would provide a common platform for all to work and stand together", he asserted.

The Manipur Legislative Assembly election is a step towards building such a common platform, he continued.

He then appealed to all the people of Manipur to support NPP and cast their votes on its symbol of book.

Apart from welcoming the nine intending candidates who joined NPP recently, Conrad Sangma announced that they would be given the party's tickets to contest the forthcoming election.

The nine intending candidates who have joined NPP include MLA Yumkham Erabot (Wangkhei AC) and MLA M Rameshwar (Kakching AC) .

The others are Sapam Kangleipal (Lamlai AC), Makakmayum Abbas Khan (Jiribam AC), T Zangkhomang alias Jangmang Haokip (Tengnoupal AC), Ningam Chamroy (Chingai AC), Seikholal Haokip (Saikul AC), Thangthatling Sinate (Tipaimukh AC) and Th Thangzalian (Churachandpur AC) .

Taking into account the nine candidates announced today, NPP has named 42 candidates for the forthcoming election.

NPP National vice-president and Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar too spoke at the gathering.
