Giving a report of the incident at BT Road, in which a woman out shopping with her child, was shot dead while another man was killed in the follow up action by police, Chief Minister today read out the version of the incident prepared by the police with the caption, 'Brief note on the incident of indiscriminate firing by unknown armed person at BT Road' .
Five people were also injured in the incident.
Reading out the police prepared statement, the Chief Minister said that a suspicious looking youth was asked to stop by a team of Imphal West police commandos, while they were on frisking duty, near the Bhagyachandra statue today at about 10.30 am.
When the youth was asked to stop, he pulled out a gun, fired towards the frisking party, and fled along BT Road, said the Chief Minister.
The police party dived and retaliated immediately and pursued the fleeing youth, who fired towards the public indiscriminately, in a bid to escape.
The youth was finally cornered inside Maimu pharmacy, on BT Road and asked the surrender, said the Chief Minister, quoting the police statement.
However, instead of surrendering, the youth opened fire, claimed the Chief Minister and he was killed in retaliatory firing.
One 9 mm pistol (Mauser), loaded with three live rounds and one round in the chamber was recovered.
A driving licence in the name of Chongkham Sanjit Meitei, son of Ch Khelson Meitei of Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai, Manipur, issued by the Licensing and Registering Authority, Transport Department, Senapati was also recovered from the possession of the slain youth.
On one side of the licence, the date of issue of the licence is given as 30/03/09 while on the other side the date of issue is given as 13/07/09, said the Chief Minister and added that the genuineness of the licence is being verified.
Due to the indiscriminate firing by the armed youth, one unidentified lady succumbed to her injury, near the Sulabh toilet and five persons were injured, he added.
The five injured persons have been identified as Wankheirakpam Gitarani Devi (40), wife of (L) W Nongyai Singh of Tengdongyang (injury on chest and left leg, in serious condition), Ningthoujam Kishorani Devi (43), wife of N Raghumani Singh of Narakonjin (injured on the left leg), Golmei Mangol (58), son of Lemba of Maha Kabui Namching, Keithelmanbi (injured on left arm), Pangambam Lukhoi Singh (30), son of P Pakchao Singh of Heingang Makha Leikai (injured on chest, in serious condition) and Kangabam Subhachandra Singh (40), son of K Samungou Singh of Kha-Potsangbam (injured on right ear, minor injury).
In a separate statement, SSP of Imphal West police, L Kailun identified the deceased young woman as Thokchom ongbi Rabina Devi (23) wife of Chinglensana of Lamsang bazar.
The SSP further said that on investigation, the slain youth has been identified as Chungkham Sajit alias Ramesh alias Ngongo alias Chingkhei of Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai and added that he was arrested twice earlier and booked under NSA on July 19, 2007.At the time of his first arrest in 2000, he was holding the rank of corporal in the PLA under army number 2338 .
