Imphal, May 23 2016: Urging the authority concerned to provide adequate infrastructure in the colleges, Joint Students' Union of DM College, a body of student unions of DM College of Arts, Commerce and Science, has threatened to boycott 2016-17 academic session if the authorities fail to meet their demands.

Addressing media persons at DMC premises today, convener of the union and general secretary of DM College of Arts, K Dilipkumar said that even though the Education Department has given repeated assurances to provide infrastructure to the three colleges no concrete steps have been taken up to fulfil the assurances so far.

It is very unfortunate that one of the oldest colleges of Manipur is in a state of decay due to lackadaisical attitude of the authorities concerned, he said.

He added that the Joint Students' Union was formed to press the authorities to take up developmental works in the DMC campus like fitting of street lamp lighting system, construction of wall fencing around playgrounds, construction of common room for both boys and girls and other infrastructure.

The Joint Director of Education (U) had on an earlier occasion visited the college and assured to take up infrastructure development works.

The official gave verbal assurance to initiate the works by May.

Unfortunately, there is no sign of such work being taken up so far, he rued.

Due to poor drainage system, DM College of Commerce is now submerged in flood water causing serious inconveniences to students.

Moreover road repairing work has ceased before covering the entire campus roads of the college, he alleged.

Dilipkumar asked why some stretches of the roads were left unrepaired.

The Western block of the college is outdated as rain water has started seeping in.

In such a state, students are facing tremendous inconveniences thereby affecting the academic environment.

General secretary of DM College of Sciences Nilakanta Longjam added that after the Jan 4 earthquake which shook the entire State, almost all classrooms of DM Science have developed cracks which could lead to disastrous consequences if another powerful earthquake ever strikes the State again.

He urged the authorities concerned to take the matter seriously and do the needful at the earliest.

General secretary of DM College of Commerce Ch Bikramjit stated that various infrastructure of all three colleges are left to perish on the pretext of upgrading it to a university.

Such delaying tactics of the authorities should not hamper the educational environment which students are currently facing, he added.

All benefits under the UGC are not given to students, he pointed out.

Drawing the attention of the Chief Minister he added that the financial allocation for higher education in the State Budget should be increased.

Further, he warned that the Joint Students' Union of DM College will boycott the upcoming 2016-17 academic session if the authorities concerned fail to meet their demands at the earliest.
