DG details modernisation drive

A sum of Rs 20 crores has been set aside for modernisation of the State Police during 2008-09 .
This was informed by Director General of Police Y Joykumar while speaking at the inaugural function of the newly constructed office building of SP Bishnupur today.
He said that construction of the office building for SP Bishnupur is also a part of the police modernisation programme.
In tandem with construction of office buildings of Superintendents of Police, construction of office buildings for DIGs have also been initiated, said Joykumar.
Moreover, necessary steps have been taken up to set up women police stations and women commando units in all the district headquarters, the DGP informed.
Joykumar instructed all the SPs to fix appropriate sites for the proposed women police stations by April this year.
Disclosing that plans are afoot to build commando complexes in all the valley districts, the DGP hinted that commando complexes for Imphal East and Imphal West districts may be constructed together at Lamphelpat.
Speaking at the occasion, SP Bishnupur K Jayenta conveyed relieve that the inconveniences encountered all these years due to using land and office on lease will be over with the inauguration of the newly constructed office building.
The office inaugurated today was constructed under the aegis of Manipur Police Housing Corporation from March 2004 .
3 KRA(U) cadres held : In its drive against militants of different undergroud groups, Thoubal police commandos arrested three KRA(U) cadres from Lilong Mairenkhun at about 4 pm yesterday.
One .32 pistol of Italy made with one magazine, one Indian made hand grenade (HE 36) and a Maruti car bearing no MN-01K/4369 were recovered from the cadres identified as Laishram Boy alias Sachichandra (29) of Keishampat Jailor Leirak, Md Jahiya (24) of Lilong Sambrukhong and Md Farooque Ahamad (28) Lilong Sambrukhong, said the police sources.
On further verification the arrested cadres are learned to have worked with one king alias Raju of Huidrom Leirak and one Yangba of Keishampat Jailor Leirak and involved in extortion, demand of money from general public and kidnapping for ransom, added the sources.
