Imphal, December 04 2011:
About 20 trucks that left Imphal this morning to transport goods have reportedly been detained in connection with levying of illegal taxes at Karong area of Senapati district.
According to a source some unknown persons detained the goods carriers on the ground that the vehicle owners owed annual tax to the NSCN (IM) organisation.
While illegal tax collection from trucks plying along the Imphal-Dimapur route has been a regular feature, today's incident is the first of its kind after 120 days as goods carriers ceased operation on NH-2 section due to the economic blockades enforced by both UNC and SHDDC, reminded the source.
It may be noted here that some transport bodies had decided to ply only on the Imphal-Jiribam route of NH-37 due to frequent cases of extortion and attack on vehicle operators by activists of armed groups on NH-2 .
