Imphal, July 23 2018: The 9th Death Anniversaries of Thokchom Rabina and Chungkham Sanjit, who were killed on July 23, 2009 during the infamous BT Road incident, was held at Keishampat Lairembi community Hall, today.

The function which was jointly organized by Working Committee of the Apunba Lup and Joint Action Committee against the brutal killing of Thokchom Rabina and Chungkham Sanjit, was graced by Apunba Lup coordinators Phunindro Konsam, Yumnam Ratankumar, Joy Chingakham and the organization's assistant coordinator Joychandra Konthoujam as the presidium members.

AMKIL president Ph Sakhi, Poirei Leimarol president M Memchoubi, Kanglamei president Y Leirik Leima and KAWA vice president Kumu Leima were also present as well.

Speaking at the function, AMUCO president Ph Deban noted that there is always a need for strengthening the peoples' movement in the State as the people are the only ones who have to protect the State from various threats from time to time.

He alleged that neither the BJP leaders nor the Congress leaders or any other politician will be able to save the State when a real crisis occurs although they shout so many things and express concerns on the State's issues.

Whether it is the BJP or the Congress, the attitude and perception towards Manipur always remains the same.

The Central Government considers the people of Manipur as people living under their mercy.

The Manipuri people don't get the right to rule themselves and the Central Government can do whatever they want anytime, he said and added that however, the voices of the people and CSOs have drawn the attention of many international forums/bodies like Amnesty International and many other human rights activists.

It is only because of this that the alleged fake encounter cases and violation of human rights in the State by security forces have received global recognition that led to the constitution of the SIT by CBI for investigating/probing into the many alleged fake encounter cases.

Hence it is a must for the people of the State and CSOs to always remain alert to defend themselves from any unwanted policy or anything done against the people of the State, he added.

Deban continued that a matter of giving away some portion of Manipur to Nagaland has resurfaced in connection with the Framework Agreement and caused a lot of apprehension among the people of the State.

It is uncertain whether the apprehension of the people will turn out to be right or wrong.

As such, Manipur may lose its territory if the people and CSOs do not remain alert, he added.

Deban also decried that Adya Prasad Pandey is stubbornly holding on to his post as VC and the Government cannot do anything to remove him despite the allegations by the students, teachers and staffs regarding the VC's corruption and dereliction of duty.

The students of the State have not been able to attend classes for more than two months due to the impasse at Manipur University and the Central Government has not taken up any significant steps till date.

This shows that the Central Government does not care about the people of Manipur which is very unfortunate, he said.

Phunindro Konsam conveyed that Apunba Lup takes strong exception of the sluggish nature of CBI investigation, saying that justice in the alleged fake encounter cases are being denied as not a single police personnel has been punished till date even after Thounaojam Herojit Singh, a Manipur Police constable had confessed that he killed Sanjit.

He further asked the State Government to support and cooperate with the CBI investigation, especially in submitting true reports from the Government's side.
