'People's Road' opens with International motor bike rally

Tamenglong, February 16, 2013: A day ahead of inauguration of the 'People's Road' officially, an International motor bike rally has been flagged off today along the newly constructed road connecting Tousem in Tamenglong district with Halflong in Assam.

Being organized under the aegis of Haitung Good Will Foundation, the motorbike rally was flagged off from Immanuel Theogical Seminary (ITS), Chiuluan by Rev.Dr.Adui, Secretary of Zeliangrong Baptist Church Council North East India.

More than 36 motor bikers from Kohima, Senapati, Ukhrul, Chandel and Tamenglong are participating in the rally.

Aptly christened as the 'People's Road' on account of public contribution towards the construction of the road under the initiative of SDO Tousem Sub-Division, Armstrong Pame, IAS, without any help from the Government, the 100-km road which would serve as an important link for the people in the three neighbouring States of Manipur, Nagaland and Assam, would be officially inaugurated by Armstrong Pame at Katangnam village tomorrow along with unveiling a monolith to mark the event.

The monolith would bear the names of the donors who have contributed their mite in various forms towards realization of the road.

Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Armstrong Pame said that the bikers would halt the night at Phoklong village where a social night would be arranged.

Tomorrow morning, they would head for Tungje village in Assam, from where they would return to Katangnam along with 60 bikers from Assam to take part in the official inauguration of the road.

An alumnus of St Stephen's College, Delhi University, Armstrong Pame is the first IAS from Zeme tribe of Tamenglong district.

Pamei involved local community in the construction of the road, which was initially started in August last year with the target of opening the road thrown open to the public before Christmas.

However, the rugged rocky mountain terrain got it delayed by two more months.

In appreciation of the efforts made by him, Armstrong Pame was awarded the Exceptional Contribution Award of the "gfiles Governance Awards 2012".He was also nominated CNN-IBN for the Indian Of The Year 2012 in the Public Service category.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that three participating bikers from Kohima felt down 3/4 times and got hurt.

With their legs swollen, doctors have advised them to discontinue from the rally.

The three injured are expected to return to Kohima tomorrow.
