Imphal under siege, many hurt in student-cop clash
Source: Hueiyen News Service / NNN

Imphal, August 06 2014: Imphal city remained under siege for several hours today with student protestors demanding implementation of Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) clashing with the police at various places.

Scores of student protestors and at least five police personnel sustained injuries in the clash which broke out when a large number of students belonging to Imphal College, Manipur College and GP Women's College came marching towards the Chief Minister's bungalow from three different directions.

When around 800 students belonging to Manipur College came down marching from Singjamei Chingamakhong along Indo-Burma Road with the intention of storming the Chief Minister's bungalow at Babupura here, a team of Manipur Police personnel first stopped them near Imo Filling Oil Pump at Yumnam Leikai, thus leading to a heated argument.

The angry student protestors tried to break free of the police barricades and blocked Indo-Burma Road.

But when they started causing damage to some private vehicles, police resorted to firing tear gas shells and mock bombs.

The angry students also retaliated with pelting stones.

In the ensuing melee, at least one police constable and three students were hurt.

Unhappy over the police action on the student protestors, onlookers also sided with the students, giving a hard time to the police to bring the situation under control.

Student protestors of Imphal College who came marching towards the Chief Minister's bungalow along Tiddim road were also detained by police at Keishampat. Police also foiled the attempt of the students of G..PWomen's College to storm the Chief Minister's bungalow by stopping them from proceeding further at Keishampat.

Not deterred by the police action, the agitated students continued to march towards Ima Keithel after passing through Wahengbam Leikai.

But as they reached the BT fly over, police stopped them and forced to reverse their march.

Here too, women folk of Ima Keithel, who were staging sit-in-protest for implementation of ILP, supported the students.

In the ensuing confrontation, many students were hurt and they were rushed to RIMS for medical attention by the womenfolk of Ima Keithel.

Kangleipak Economy Development Organisation (KEDO) also extended monetary help to the injured students.

Of the many students who sustained injuries during the confrontation with the police today, those from GP Women's College have been Ningombam Thaja (21) d/o N.Girani of Heingang; Okram Rojia (21)d/o O.Rurendro of Singjamei Waikhom Leikai; Samulailatpam Gitanjali Devi, d/o Thonba; Soram Olivia (20) d/o Bimol of Pukhao Ahallup; Sushma Khwairakpam (20), d/o Suren of Kongba Bazar; Saikhom Vimita (20) d/o Jiten of Mayanglangjing Tamang; Miranda Koijam (20) d/o (L) Iboyai; Thounaojam Nganthoi (21) d/o Santikumar of Moirangpurel and Jeny Kom (19) d/o Akhup Kom of Maiba Khul.
