Arrested women leaders sent to jail

Imphal, July 26 2014 : Women agitators who were arrested by the police during the movement agauinst non- implementation of ILP system in the state and who refused to take bail from the law court have been sent to jail after they were produced in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal West here today.

28 women who courted arrest during the movement included 7 leaders of AMKIL, 4 of Nupi Samaj, 5 of Nupi Keithel Phambi Apuna Lup, 2 each of Poirei Leimarol, Tammi Chingmee and WASAK, one each of MEEKHOL, KANGLAMEI and KWWA and 3 volunteers of KIL.

The 7 members of AMKIL are L.Mema, L.Premila, RK Sanahanbi, T.Surbala and T.Bilashini, while 2 leaders of the Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi are RK Sanahanbi and RK Guni.

Among the arrested women leaders, the 2 from WASAK are RK Thariksana and T.Sana, while the lone leader of MIKHOL was N.Santi.

The arrested leaders of KIL are RK Sanahanbi, S.Memcha and Ph.

Gunapati, while the 2 leaders of Tammee Chingmee are A.Sibanmala and Sanahanbi.

The arrested member of Kanglamei is A.Gomati.

Arrested women leaders sent to jail

All the women leaders were arrested by city police during the movement launched by street vendors and temporary market women of Khwairamband Bazar on Friday.

A number of other women were reportedly set freed by the police after the agitation.

When the City Police brought the arrested women before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West after registering an FIR bearing no.120(7) 2014 under City Police station, the Magistrate advised the women leaders to get a PR bond of Rs.1000 each for the crimes they had committed under CrPc section 147/149/188/353 .

However, as the 27 women refused to do so, they were remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.

The women leaders, after they were remanded in judicial custody, claimed, 'As their agitation is rightful, it is not appropriate to take action against them'.

The women leaders swore that they would not go out from the jail until they are released without any condition.

Meanwhile, the women wing of Joint Committee on ILP system, during a press meet at Manipur press club here today, announced that a Meira (Torch) Rally will be staged throughout the state tomorrow from 6 pm to 8 pm in defiance of CrPc 144 imposed by the State administration to thwart the public movement for implementation of ILP system in Manipur.

Demanding unconditional release of all who have been arrested during the movement, the women wing leaders urged the government to book and punish the guilty police personnel who maltreated and seriously beaten up student agitators.

It further urged the government to take a fitting resolution for implementation of the ILP system during the ongoing Legislative Assembly session.

The women wing warned of more severe forms of agitations even after the assembly session, if their demands are not conceded.
