Awareness campaign against 'Illicit Poppy Plantation' held at Senapati

Senapati, October 08 2019: Awareness programme against 'Illicit Poppy Plantation' organised by Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Senapati District was held at Mini Indoor Stadium, Senapati.

The programme was attended by LM Khaute (IPS), DGP, Manipur; Kereilhouvi Angami (IFS), Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Manipur; L Kailun (IPS), ADGP (L/O); K Jayanta Singh (IPS), IGP (Zone III); Themthing Ngashangva (IPS), DIG (Range IV); Brig Ravroop Singh, Commandant 59 Mountain Brigade, Senapati; W Basu Singh (MPS), SP (NAB); DLOs, CSOs of the district, village chiefs, village chairmen and secretaries, social leaders and general public.

Delivering the welcome note, Somorjit Salam (IAS), DC Senapati said that the programme was aimed at to bring awareness of all the ill effects of Poppy plantation in the district.

DGP LM Khaute, in his speech, said that the state police force has been trying to maintain law and order in the State and has apprehended many persons involving in illegal smuggling of contraband drugs and products in the state.

W Basu Singh also gave the power point presentation about the legal provisions and penal provision one could be booked under Indian Penal Code.

K Angami, in his speech, said that fashion changes in a short time and asked why can't people also change for better future.

He mentioned that scientists warned of climate change some 20 years back and one could feel the change at present.

Likewise, the PCCF of the state warned of dire consequences if one does not pay heed to the warnings at present.

D John Sha DFO, Senapati gave the power point presentation about the ill effects of poppy plantation, ill effects of deforestation and alternative means of livelihood.

In his speech, the DFO mentioned that Agroforestry activities like agri-horti-silvicultural system, silvi-horticultural system, agri-silvicultural system and agri-horticultural system could give as an alternative means of livelihood.

In regard to alternative employment, the DFO said that development of animal husbandry and dairy farming or training of artisans and development of handicrafts could give the alternative means.

Power point presentation from the Assam Rifles and Narcotics Control Bureau continued in the later part of the programme.
