Imphal, May 21 2024:
In a surprising case of robbery, unknown miscreants tore down the south-western brick wall of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Manipur located at Lamphelpat and slipped away with the disassembled bricks and other construction materials.
Reportedly, the brick wall built along the perimeter of the institute measures a total of 1.50 km and cost roughly Rs 2.65 crore to build.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at NIT Manipur Office, Dr Khumanthem Manglem Singh, Director, said that the theft was discovered this afternoon.
He added that a complaint has been filed at Lamphel Police Station regarding the dismantling of the brick wall and theft of bricks as well as some construction materials kept within the NIT complex.
A police investigation into the matter has also been sought.
Condemning the incident, he appealed against a repetition of such despicable acts and urged the police to nab the culprits.
The portion of the wallfencing which suffered damage is quite large and allegedly adjoins what used to be the residences of another community involved in the conflict.
Meanwhile, Professor Khumukcham Tomba, Registrar, NIT Manipur has pointed out the threat posed by the destruction of the wall-fencing to the safety and security of students, which include many from outside the State staying in hostels.
A team of NIT officials including the Director, Head, and Dean of NIT inspected the site today and a report has been submitted to the Ministry of Education, shared the NIT Manipur Registrar.
