Tengnoupal, October 15 2024:
The Assam Rifles organized an awareness program for the residents of Chongjang in Tengnoupal district and nearby villages, highlighting the growing issue of e-waste and its harmful effects on the environment and public health.
The event was held as a part of International E-waste Day, aiming to educate villagers on the proper disposal of electronic devices and the dangers posed by improper handling of e-waste, said a press release issued by IGAR (S) .
A total of 22 youths actively participated in the event, while 41 locals, including village chiefs, attended the event.
The program covered key topics such as safely discarding old electronics, securely erasing personal data from devices before recycling and adopting sustainable practices in energy consumption.
It also encouraged villagers to contribute to a greener planet by reducing their carbon footprint.
E-waste and carbon footprint pose significant environmental challenges, especially in the sensitive hill regions.
The improper disposal of electronic waste contaminates soil and water, disrupting ecosystems and harming both wildlife and local communities.
Additionally, the carbon footprint from excessive energy consumption and unsustainable practices accelerates deforestation and climate change, which can have devastating effects on the fragile hill environment, said the press note.
It is crucial for hill residents to adopt responsible e-waste disposal methods and reduce their carbon footprint by embracing renewable energy and sustainable living to protect their natural surroundings, said IGAR (S) .
