Imphal, July 09 2024:
Protesting the authority's failure to appoint a Vice Chancellor, Registrar and the required strength of non-teaching staff, students of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) launched a relay hunger strike at the university's western gate (Thangmeiband side) today.
Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the relay hunger strike, DMU Students' Union president Irom Dimocha decried that the authority has not been listening to their repeated appeals for appointment of the university's Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Controller and other staff.
Had there been full time VC, Registrar and Controller since its establishment, DMU would not have been facing the present crisis, he said.
Dimocha said that the relay hunger strike would go on until their demands are fulfilled.
After appearing in CUET, undergraduate students have started the process of registration for admission in different universities but the UG students of DMU have been facing a precarious situation as the exams have not been held nor marksheets issued in time, he said.
As such, the students fear whether they can get admission in universities or their academic career would be jeopardised, Dimocha said.
Rather than progressing, DMU has been regressing, he said.
Saying that DMU and all its students have been staring at a very uncertain future, Dimocha appealed to all stakeholders to help save the university.
He also expressed strong disapproval of RAF and police personnel occupying the university campus even before the peaceful protest started.
The protesters used placards which read, "We want full time VC, Registrar and Controller of Examinations", "Declare pending results of UG and PG exams", "Don't run the university like a contract work" etc.
