NHM Project Director calls for action plan

Imphal, August 29 2014 : National Health Mission, Manipur Project Director Dr Okram Ibomcha has called on the Chief Medical Officers of all the districts to create an action plan and monthly analysis to ensure maximum institutional delivery.

During a visit to the health centres of Saikul area, Dr Ibomcha said that 90 percent of the PHCs and 60 percent of the PHSCs of the State would have child delivery facilities soon.

He converted Saikul PHC to a centre which is functional 24/7 during his visit.

Senapati CMO Lorimao, State Programme Manager Rajiv, Arun Meitram Unicef, consultant accompanied the Director during his visit.

Okram Ibomcha also visited Sagolmang CHC and Thangal Surung PHSC.

He looked into infrastructure needs and reviewed the duties of staff and directed them to increase the rate of institutional delivery.

He also interacted with village head men and requested them to mobilise institutional child delivery.

In valley areas, 95 per cent of child delivery cases are happening in health centres, as such, there is need to focus to hill areas where the rate of institutional child delivery is low, Ibomcha said.

He said that to bring down the rate of IMR, institutional delivery is important.

NHM teams are touring to hill districts to have a gap analysis.

Saikul has a population of 64000, he said and added that 25 percent of child delivery is recorded as institutional delivery and 75 percent child delivery is done at home as per findings.

As such, NHM is targeting at 90 percent institutional delivery in this area, Ibomcha added.

Under Saikul PHSC, there are 11 sub centres and NHM is sorting out strategic PHSC centres which can perform child delivery, he added.

Child delivery facilities at Kanpokpi and Motbung would be enhanced soon, he promised.

NHM would look into water and power supplies and other needs as well, he said and added that Gamphajol PHSC is now ready to be upgraded to child delivery centre, which would be functional 24/7 .

Despite occupying the first position in Infant Mortality Rate, Manipur used to settle at Red or Brown colour category in health sector as per National indicator which was the worst situation, Ibomcha said.

However, Manipur now has moved up to Yellow category as per last year's report, he said and added that next year, the State is likely to reach Green category if the current trend continues.
