JAC against mother-daughter killing to intensify stir

Imphal, January 29 2010: A post-mortem report of a widow and her 17 year-old daughter, who were found killed on January 17 at Phayeng, indicated that the daughter, Angom Menaka alias Ibemcha was possibly gang-raped before she was killed, according to a highly reliable source.

The post-mortem report of Menaka, mentions traces of male seminal fluid on the parts of her body.

Such trace, however, was not found on the body of the mother.

Medico-legal experts pointed to the possibility of the mother and daughter being killed by gagging their mouths.

The police, however, refused to disclose the post mortem report.

SSP of Imphal West district, L Kailun said, the police are tracing the crime from all possible angles.

The police are closely studying the family history and the enmity, if any, the family might have had with anyone.

"The police have examined some suspects and there has been progress in the case," L Kailun said.

Meanwhile, peeved over the failure of the government in booking the culprits involved in the alleged gang rape and killing of a mother and her 17 year old daughter at Phayeng within the January 27 deadline, a JAC formed in connection with the incident has today decided to launch various forms of democratic agitation until the demands are achieved.

This was decided today at a public meeting convened by the JAC against the brutal killing of Angom (O) Chanbi and her daughter Menaka at Phayeng Sorok Leikai.

The meeting, which began at 11am and lasted till 4.30pm, decided to launch agitations like sit-in-protest, bandh, blockade, and boycott of public leaders.

It also urged the public to extend cooperation in the demand for justice.

The meeting strongly felt that the government should act swiftly in booking the culprits so as to cast away all doubts over the involvement of the government personnel in the killing.

It further urged all concerned groups to clarify in order to find out the truth behind the heinous crime.

The meeting was attended by public of Phayeng area, representatives of AMUCO, UCM and other bodies.

Speaking at the meeting, secretary of Women Action for Development (WAD), Sobita Mangtasabam noted that the killing of a widow and her daughter is the violation of rights at the highest degree.

The culprits should be booked and capital punishment should be awarded as there has been no heinous a crime as the killing of a widow and her daughter.

The culprits must be punished fittingly in order to prevent the recurrence of such crime, Sobita felt.

She recalled that a newly born twin baby girls were found disposed at Lamphelpat recently.

A young housewife was found hanging in a suspicious manner at Ghari.

There have been many crimes against women which went unnoticed.

She lamented that none of the 60 MLAs dares to fight against the crime against women.

Sobita also said that ways should also be suggested to protect the kin of the victims.

She suggested that regular counseling and proper medical attendance should be given to them.

Meanwhile, locals have restricted the movement of vehicles in Phayeng area today.
