Imphal, June 26 2022: As observed all across the globe, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was also observed today by various Government and private bodies in the State.

Imphal Police Station in collaboration with Shine- Integrated Rehabilitation Center for Addict (IRCA) IWCDC jointly observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today in an event held at Shine-IRCA, Yumnam Leikai, Singjamei.

The program was graced by N Johnson, OC, Imphal Police Station, Imphal West district as the chief guest, I Nandeshore, president, Thangmeiband Improvement Club as president of the function and N Jibanlata, secretary, Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai Meira Paibi and Azmir, 2nd OC, Imphal West Police as the guests of honour.

Annie Mangsatabam, secretary Integrated Women And Children Development Centre (IWCDC) delivered the keynote address and stated that as observed across the globe, Imphal PS and Shine Integrated Rehabilitation Center for Addict had come together to celebrate the day within the premises of the rehabilitation centre.

She also expressed her gratitude to Imphal PS for providing the rehabilitation centre with various of essential items.

This rehabilitation centre has been able to function and provide its services to the society for the last 30 years due to the cooperation and support of the local club and meira paibis, she added.

Annie Mangsatabam went on to say that the centre had successfully treated scores of drug abusers and brought them on the path of a healthy and successful life.

She further urged for the present inmates' support in changing their lives for the better.

In another event, Federation of Indian NGOs for Drug Abuse Prevention (FINGODAP) Manipur Chapter also organized the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observance today at Sneha Bhavan.

The program was graced by Ngangom Uttam Singh, Director of Social Welfare as the chief guest; Rev Sr Tresa Karot, secretary Sneha Bhavan as the guest of honour and Dr A Jayanta Kumar, Director State Level Coordination Agency (SLCA) as the president of the function.

The event was attended by all NGOs funded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Andro Police Station team in association with Anti Drug Committee Andro Kendra, Imphal East District Manipur also observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking 2022 at Andro Police Station as a part of "War Against Drug" mission of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

The programme was graced by Inspector Md Riaj Khan, OC, Andro PS and Anti Drug Committee members namely Md Islao Rahaman Pesh Imam Ngarian, Md Riyajuddin alias Sana Nongsaibam, president, Tulihal Educated Association and Md Rayees Khan, social worker and founder, Manipur Creative School, Deulaland and Yunus Kori, social worker.

Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) also organised a one-day sensitisation workshop on "Investigation and Prosecution Under ND & PS Act, 1985" as a part of their observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

A statement issued by MASLSA has shared that the workshop was attended by Salam Imocha Singh, Spl Judge, Fast Track Court (POCSO), Manipur-1; P Ibomcha, retd Director of Prosecution; Ojesh Mutum, Member Secretary, Manipur SLSA and Sadananda Sorokhaibam, Additional Member Secretary, Manipur SLSA as the presidium members.

Ojesh Mutum delivered the welcome and keynote address of the program while Salam Imocha Singh deliberated on the topic "Crucial aspects of investigation of offences under ND & PS Act, 1985 with relevant directions of the Hon'ble Supreme Court" .

He emphasized on following the mandatory provisions of ND & PS Act and the need for proper seizure of contraband items and proper collection of evidence.

P Ibomcha also addressed the gathering and spoke on the topic "Prosecution of offences under ND & PS Act, 1985; along with case studies" .

He gave a detailed presentation along with various case studies for a more effective investigation and prosecution.

He also elaborated on the do's and don'ts, following the procedures laid down in CrPC, Evidence Act, for proper prosecution under the ND & PS Act.

During the interaction session, the Public Prosecutors and Investigating Officers (IOs) shared their issues, the statement informed.

Separately, Hope Ministry Rehabilitation Centre in collaboration with Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur Branch at also observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today at Macheng Village Community Hall under the theme "Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises" .

The observation function was attended by IPS Lunsel Kipgen IGP Prison, Dr S Manikanta, President, Indian Psychiatric Society Manipur Branch, Professor Kh Santibala, Vice President; Dr S Gojendro State Secretary and Padma Shri Awardee Guru Rewben Mashangva as presidium members.

On the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) also conducted an event under the theme of "Illicit Drug: The Dark Future of Youth" at Herbert School, Changangei.

The programme was attended by Dr Mayanglambam Nandakumar Meitei, Child Psychologist; Homendro Yambem, vice principal, Herbert School and Leishangthem Lamyanba, president DESAM as presidium members.

Speaking on the occasion, Leishangthem Rajesh, secretary, Anti Drug Abuse and Special Task Force, DESAM Head Office expressed the need for appointing psychologists in both private and government schools across the State.

He reasoned that students face a slew of problems that may originate from within their friend circle or their homes.

he stated that such students will benefit from receiving counselling from psychologists.

He also addressed the role of adults in introducing harmful substances like paan, talab etc to unassuming children by sending them on errands to buy these items from local shops.

He urged adults to exercise great caution in this connection.

Lastly, he urged the State Government to carry out the campaign against drugs with a sincere mindset.

Manipur Students Federation (MSF) has urged the people of Manipur to halt the sale and purchase of drugs and alcohol on the occasion of International Day Against Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

In a statement, MSF appealed to the public to take a stand against abusing drugs and alcohol.

MSF has asserted that without a viable drug use prevention programme, War On Drugs 2.0 cannot be fully successful.
