Source: Chronicle News Service / DIPR

Imphal, June 12 2021: While stressing the need for strengthening coordination among the state's healthcare institutions for effective containment of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as close coordination between the doctors and nurses, chief minister N Biren Singh affirmed that priority of the government is to the save as many lives as possible.

The chief minister, who on Saturday inaugurated a newly established COVID Intensive Care Unit (ICU)/ Accident Trauma Centre at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) and a 60-bedded COVID Care Centre set up at the multipurpose hall of Standard College, Kongba, Imphal East District, said that the government will utilise all available resources to ensure speedy recovery of Covid patients and prevent fatalities as much as possible.

Iterating that saving peoples' lives will remain the top priority of the government, he further informed that the government would take stringent action against those hospitals or staff if they were found to intentionally neglect in attending their patients thereby putting their lives into risk.

Biren also maintained that the government had been putting in the best efforts to flatten the curve of the pandemic by setting up dedicated COVID hospitals, COVID Care Centres and oxygen plants among others at different places.

Construction of a 200-bedded dedicated COVID hospital with 50 ICU beds is also in progress at Kyamgei with the assistance of DRDO and the same would be ready for operation within a month, he added.

He also informed that construction works for setting of oxygen plants in certain hill districts is in progress and recounted that the Central government had given sanction for establishing of an oxygen plant in the state capable of refilling 200 cylinders.

While assuring that state will have adequate supply of oxygen once these plants become operational, Biren also informed that the state now has adequate facilities for accommodating COVID-19 patients in the five-six dedicated COVID hospitals, and over 2000 beds at different COVID Care Centres and other facilities set up at every Assembly Constituencies.

He urged the doctors, nurses and other staff of JNIMS to work in proper coordination and understanding with one another and suggested that they bring to the notice of the government and authority concerned in case of any grievances.

The CM assured that the government would always be ready to sort out their grievances.

He also appealed to the public to be responsible and adhere to the SOPs issued by the government from time to time saying that support and cooperation of each and every individual is much necessary for fighting the pandemic successfully.

With regard to the newly inaugurated ICU Block, the chief minister observed that it would be of great relief to the JNIMS and the people of the state as supply of oxygen to COVID-19 infected patients had been a major concern.

Setting up of such ICU beds with ventilators and other sophisticated equipment would be a huge help to the efforts of doctors and nurses in providing treatment and saving the lives of the people from the pandemic, he added.

Noting that every frontline worker has been rendering their best possible services in many forms such as transportation of Oxygen Cylinders and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), he appealed to the doctors and nurses to put their best efforts to save the lives of people.

He informed that the government has assigned different teams consisting of three officers each to four major COVID hospitals namely RIMS, JNIMS, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute and Raj Medicity to strengthen coordination between the hospitals authorities, patients and the government.

Meanwhile, addressing a gathering of his ministerial colleagues and officials of department concerned after inaugurating the 60-bedded Covid facility at Standard College, Kongba, Biren stated that the recent upsurge in the COVID-19 mortality rate was mostly due to the co-morbid- ity of positive patients and therefore the government has been making arrangement for increasing ICU beds with ventilators to take care of such patients and make every effort to save their lives.

He also claimed that the rate of vaccination in the state is high with nearly six lakh people inoculated till date and many people turning up to get vaccinated.

The chief appealed to the public not to believe in any misleading and false rumours regarding the vaccine and its effect.

Regarding the Makru Bridge which was a long awaited dream of the people of Manipur, he said that the construction of the bridge had been fully completed and added that the government is waiting for its curing time to inaugurate the same so that heavy vehicles could go ply through bridge at the time of inauguration.

As per reports, the new JNIMS ICU block has a capacity of 100 beds equipped with advanced medical facilities considered essential for treatment of COVID-19 positive patients who need intensive care.

The centre which is equipped with oxygen concentrators and oxygen cylinders will be manned by 12 doctors, 14 nurses and 9 multitasking staff.

The centre would be used for treatment of mild symptomatic positive patients.

Among others, the inauguration events were also attended by agriculture minister Oinam Lukhoi, Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, advisor to Chief Minister (Health) Dr Sapam Ranjan, Loktak Development Authority chairman L Susindro, Principal Secretary (health) V Vumlunmang, secretary to Chief Minister N Geoffrey, JNIMS officials, Kshetrigao MLA Nahakpam Indrajit, officials of Imphal East district administration, and Medical Directorate.
