Indian Organ Donation Day observed

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day today with a daylong awareness programme and poster competition on the theme, "Be a Lifesaver - Pledge to Donate Organ" .
As per a release issued by RIMS, the programme was held at the General OPD, RIMS Hospital as part of the national campaign, "Angdaan- Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyaan" .
Addressing the gathering, Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, Imphal, emphasized the life-saving impact of organ donation and pointed out India's low donation rate- less than one donor per million.
He highlighted the potential of deceased donations to save up to eight lives and stressed the need for public awareness, announcing RIMS' plan to launch an eye bank soon.
Prof G Sunil Kumar also administered the Organ Donation Pledge in 1he presence of Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent; Principal of the College of Nursing and Heads of Departments.
Laishram Monica Devi, Transplant Coordinator also presented an overview of RIMS' transplant achievements.
The event saw participation from over 500 individuals, including students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Over 30 students from MBBS, Nursing, MLT, MRIT, BASLP, and allied fields took part in a poster competition promoting organ donation and dispelling related myths.
The winners of the poster competition were felicitated for their creative promotion of organ donation.
Venish Keisham won the first prize, Deepa Laishram secured the second prize, both from Manipur University of Culture, and Nilotpal Das, an MBBS student from RIMS, bagged the third prize.
All other participants were also awarded certificates of participation.
Awareness stalls were set up by various departments, each featuring Information, Education, and Communication (TEC) materials, along with one-on-one counselling and pledge registration facilities.
Two individuals pledged to donate their organs during the event.
