Imphal, June 01 2021: With the aim of ensuring early detection and early medication to flatten the Covid-19 curve, chief minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday flagged off "Aggressive Mass Covid-19 Testing drive in Imphal West" from the office complex of the Health Directorate, Lamphelpat here.

The mass testing drive is being organised by Imphal West district administration and different teams consisting of medical staff will fan out to various locations of the district to conduct mass testing for Covid-19.Addressing the gathering, the chief minister asserted that the government has taken up the mass testing drive as it believes that early detection for early medication is one of the surest ways to contain the Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

Biren said that he felt proud of the spirit and courage shown by frontline workers including doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff while rendering their endless services to save the lives of people from the pandemic.

He expressed satisfaction that similar to the Indian Army sacrificing their lives to protect the sovereignty of the motherland on many instances, health workers are also taking an important role in saving the lives of the people in this crucial hour of the pandemic.

Stating that the government had been putting in every possible effort to fight Covid-19, N Biren maintained that mass testing and vaccination drives are being taken up to prevent the state from moving towards any uncontrollable situation.

Saving precious lives of the people is the top priority in this hour of crisis, he said, while appealing to the people to cooperate in the mass testing drive so that early medication could follow.

The CM also pointed out that detection of positive cases would rise for some days with commencement of mass testing drive but would decline gradually.

He further informed that he has advised all sitting MLAs to set up Community Isolation Centres in their respective assembly constituencies for accommodating Covid-19 positive patients whose number is likely to increase following the initiation of mass testing drive.

According to Imphal West deputy commissioner Th Kirankumar, the district administration had come up with the idea of mass testing drive under the directive of the chief minister to curb the spread of the pandemic.

He further said that during the drive, around 3500 to 5000 tests will be conducted every day for the next 15 days to identify positive cases and take necessary measures.

Expressing confidence that such step would help in bringing down the number of positive cases in the coming days, he also expressed gratitude to the Health Department, Manipur University, Canchipur, Heritage Convent, Uripok, local clubs and others for their support and cooperation in the initiative.

The flagging off ceremony was also attended by advisor to chief minister (Health) Dr Sapam Ranjan, principal secretary V Vumlunmang, Imphal West CMO, officials of Imphal West district administration and Medical Directorate among others.

It may be mentioned here that on the first day, Aggressive Mass Covid-19 Testing drive was conducted at Kumari High School, Hiyangthang; Mutum Phibou UPS, Mutum Phibou; Manipur University; Langthabal Khoupum community hall; Ibudhou Pakhangba community hall, Konthoujam Makha Leikai; Thangtek Yan- goi Ningthou community hall; Moidangpok Awang community hall; Awang Leikai community hall, Patsoi Part-II; Patsoi Part-III community hall; Hindi Secondary School, Kanglatongbi; Heirangoithong community hall and Khomdram Selungba community hall, Thangmeiband apart from testing centres at TG Higher Secondary School and Bir Tikendrajit International Airport.

As part of mass Covid testing policy initiated by chief minister N Biren Singh in view of ever increasing positive cases in the state, mass testing in respect of Wangoi assembly Constituency began Tuesday at Mutum Phibou village.

Local MLA and agriculture minister O Lukhoi said that mass testing will be conducted in every locality of Wangoi AC one by one and appealed to the people to undergo testing without any fear as this will help in saving precious human lives.

He further appealed all to follow SOPs issued by the government despite facing some inconvenience so that the virus could be defeated collectively.
