Ukhrul, July 01 2011:
A day-long consultative workshop on Manipur State Action Plan on Climate Change was held at the conference hall of Tangkhul Theological Assn (TTA), Hamleikhong here yesterday.
Organised jointly by All Manipur NGOs' Forum and Oikos Protection Forum with the support of Environment and Ecology Wing, Government of Manipur, which is the State Nodal Department for Climate Change Action Plan, the workshop was attended by many intellectuals and chief functionaries of various civil society groups.
The main objective of the workshop was primarily to invite comments, views, suggestions and inputs on the issue of climate change for inclusion in the draft of State Action Plant on Climate Change.
Most of the participants expressed their views stressing on the need to address the grievances of the people at the grass root level and streamlining the existing Government programmes or schemes while taking up climate adaptation measures as well as to conserve the ecosystem and biodiversity in the hill areas of Manipur.
Director of TTA Dr YL Minthing pointed out that Ukhrul town, which has around 27,000 households, has started facing the problem of scarcity of drinking water as an impact of climate change in the hill district.
Subject expert and Research Officer of Environment and Ecology Wing Dr T Brajakumar, while highlighting the need have an action plan on climate change, noted that Ukhrul and Senapati are the two most volatile districts of the State.
So, there is also the need for taking up climate adaptation measures besides formulating an action plan.
