Kakching, July 25 2009: Two women have been injured and admitted at Kakching PHC today when the police fired tear gas shells to disperse a public meeting held this afternoon at Naohalloi Lampak in Kakching to denounce the inactivity of the government in booking the culprits involved in the abduction and subsequent killing of Yengkhom Krishnadas.

Altercation ensued between the police and womenfolk when Thoubal police team led by SDPO Medhunimai tried to prevent the public meeting at Kakching Bazar today around 2.30pm saying that the meeting organisers did not obtain the permission from the concerned Deputy Commissioner.

Amidst the row, the police fired several rounds of tear gas shell to disperse the public who came to attend the meeting.

On receiving information that the JAC against the brutal killing of Y Krishnadas is organising a meeting today, security personnel including the VDF were reported to have guarded the venue of the meeting before the slated time.

When the people turned out for the meeting, the police team led by the SDPO announced using loud speaker that they were not authorised to hold the meeting without the permission of the DC.

Womenfolk present at the venue confronted the police and staunchly persisted to carry on the meeting.

Just then the policemen shelled out rounds of tear gas shell to scatter the public.

Two women suffered injury in the police firing who were later admitted at Kakching PHC.

The two injured women have been identified as Mayanglambam Tamu (65), wife of (L) Budha of Kakching Sumak Leikai and Mayanglambam Pishak (65), wife of Sanjaoba of Sumak Leikai.

Both suffered injury at their left legs.

Later in the evening around 4, womenfolk of Kakching gathered around the meeting venue and condemned the local MLA of Kakching for not even trying to prevent and control the police from dispersing the crowd which occurred just a distance away from his place.

The womenfolk were also said to have adopted four resolutions during the meeting including a resolution to socially boycott the Kakching MLA.

Meanwhile, MLA of Kakching AC, Y Surchandra told reporters here at his Kakching Turel Wangma residence that the incident was unfortunate.

He said, the norm of insisting MLAs to attend meeting that was organised without any permission and the manner of organising a meeting after knowing well that it is illegal should not be repeated in future.

He said he doesn't want to stand against the law.

Saying that he will play his own part in pressing the government to book the culprits, the MLA said he has participated in every meeting the JAC had with the CM.

He also urged all concerned not to create misunderstanding among the people on this issue while adding that hurling charge against each other should be stopped.

At the same time, the JAC against the brutal killing of Y Krishnadas has denounced the police action and said that it was a violation of democratic norms which shows the lawlessness of the state.

A JAC statement issued by the secretary of the JAC, Sh Mohendro Sharma also said it is very unfortunate to note that the MLA did nothing to neutralise the incident which took place near his residence.

It also demanded the authority to book the culprits involved in the killing of Y Krishnadas at the earliest.
