Imphal, July 09 2024:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has issued a clarification pertaining to the resignation of its vice chairman Colonel Gokul Chandra Singha (Retd) .
Notably, Colonel Gokul Chandra sent his resignation letter to the Council's chairman H Nabashyam on April 10, 2024 .
In a statement signed by the presidents of its Nagaland, Tripura, Delhi, Assam, Myanmar and Manipur units, the Council said that H Nabashyam was re-elected as its chairman for the 2024-26 term during its general conference held at Binakandi, Assam on February 17, 2024 .
According to the constitution of WMC, its chairman cannot be removed from office, it said.
Saying that Nabashyam announced his wish to resign on March 26, 2024, the Council added that Nabashyam was instead given leave by the CEC of the Council.
KN Chand, the vice chairman of WMC was appointed as chairman in-charge of the Council while Nabashyam was on leave, the Council said.
Saying that Colonel Gokul Chandra Singha resigned from WMC as he wished to contest the recent Lok Sabha election, the Council added that Colonel Gokul Chandra Singha is no longer a member of WMC.
The Council also said that Colonel Gokul Chandra Singha doesn't have the authority or the locus standi to speak on behalf of WMC.
Saying that its chairman H Nabashyam returned from leave of absence and attended the meeting of the Council held on April 14, 2024, the WMC claimed that Nabakishore Singha and Hari Singh, president and general secretary of WMC Assam unit, organised a 'secret' meeting at Cachar on April 23, 2024 to remove its chairman H Nabashyam, secretary general Yambem Arun Meetei and assistant secretary general Sarat Thangjam from their positions.
"The truth is that in the secret meeting held at Cachar, those five individuals namely Nabakishore Singha, Sanjiv Singha, KN Chand Singha, Hari Singha and Gunadhon Singh removed the administrative rights of all its State's unit leaders of India in the official WMC Whatsapp group, thus hijacking the official channel of global communication," the Council claimed and added that Nabakishore Singha and Hari Singha were expelled from WMC for the reasons mentioned above.
Alleging that Nabakishore Singha and Hari Singha surprisingly announced on social media on May 30 that Col Gokul Chandra was appointed as the new chairman of the Council, the WMC added that Nabakishore Singha and Hari Singha, however, don't have the right to speak about WMC.
It further claimed that a photo of Chief Minister N Biren Singh meeting with WMC during the flood in Manipur was published on social media on May 31, 2024, the Council added that they however, had not been granted any appointment to meet the Chief Minister for more than 18 months.
It also stated that WMC doesn't have any problem with these individuals meeting the Chief Minister but they should not be taken as representatives of the Council.
Appealing to the State Government and all concerned to stop scheming to divert the attention from the movement seeking ST status for Meetei, the Council said that they are planning to initiate a legal proceeding against the 'fake WMC/imposter WMC', which is allegedly working to confuse the people and undermine the credibility of the Council.
