Imphal, May 08 2025:
The All India Trade Union Congress ( AITUC), Manipur State Committee on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla urging him to take necessary steps to reopen the branch office of All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Motor Workers' Union (AMRTDMWU) at Sekmai as soon as possible.
In the memorandum, the AITUC Manipur informed the Governor that the AMRTDMWU is one of the oldest bodies registered under the Registrar of Trade Union Act XVI of 1926 .
The AMRTDMWU is affiliated with the AITUC, New Delhi and the National Federation of Indian Road Transport Workers.
The AITUC also mentioned that the Branch Office located at Sekmai has been closed for some time after it was dismantled by the State Police force without giving prior information to the head office.
Highlighting the importance of the Sekmai Branch Office, the AITUC said, "When unpredictable accidents happen to the drivers on highways, the only one who has to look after is the Union.
The Union provides immediate assistance to the drivers in distress, providing first aid, ambulance & financial assistance, etc".
The AITUC also pointed out that many drivers are unable to come to the Head Office located at MG Avenue, Imphal to give their welfare contribution due to various factors.
"The Branch Office was opened at Sekmai for the convenience of drivers.
If the Branch Office is closed, there will be a big gap for informing their hindrance and inconvenience caused to them on highways.
When there is blockade, bandh, emergency support during accident/unforeseen situations, etc", it added.
Furthermore, the AITUC appealed to the Governor to consider the difficulties faced by the drivers who are carrying out their duties even during these difficult times and take necessary action to reopen the Branch Office at the earliest.
