Imphal West District Commissioner N Praveen Kumar and his staff carried out a cleanliness drive, especially in isolated areas of the district under the Swachh Bharat Mission "Swachta Hi Seva" and as a part of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, today.
The cleanliness drive campaign was led by the Deputy-Commissioner along with SDO, SDC, police officers, security personnel and staff of the District Administration.
The campaign was carried out near the under construction dental college and temporary dumping site at Lamphel super market.
Speaking to media persons, N Praveen Kumar said that the cleanliness drive campaign was conducted under the Swachta Bharat Mission "Swachta hi Seva" to keep the surroundings clean, particularly as part of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The campaign started from today onwards to make a free plastic State, he said, adding that the campaign was also conducted in every Municipal ward and Gram Panchayat.
The uniqueness of this year's campaign is to basically concentrate on plastic, particularly single use plastic, he said.
All the plastics that are collected from every Municipal wards and Gram Panchayat are kept at a single site and in collaboration with the District Administration, the Imphal Municipal Council and Imphal Municipal Corporation made a temporary dumping ground at Lamphel.
The collected plastic litters are being dumped at the temporary dumping ground, he added.
All the plastic wastes will be taken by a road construction company called National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and they will be used during the construction of road for more durability.
He further stated that most of the cleanliness drives were done mostly in isolated areas.
On the other hand, the DC appealed to RIMS hospital authority to construct a suitable dumping site or dustbin inside the hospital complex, so as not to inconvenience the public.
He further appealed to the stakeholders to maintain proper management of domestic solid waste and also appealed to the public to join hands to stop dumping of waste materials and plastic in public places.
Mayang Imphal Municipal is very small but we can learn so many things from its municipality.
They segregate the waste materials, especially the plastic.
There are lots of people who will purchase the plastic that can be recycled and reused again like NHIDCL in road construction, the DC explained.
Praveen also said that a campaign of no tobacco use in the nearby areas and complex of the schools in the State was conducted and he appreciated the students of Little Flower School for taking up such measures on "no tobacco uses in the school campus".
The district committee or board is prepared to draw a yellow line in every school.
Once the yellow line is being draw, no tobacco, alcohol or other harmful items can be sold in the premise.
The district committee has started the movement now.
He then appealed to all the stakeholder to help in stopping use of tobacco and intoxicants inside school campuses.
