Imphal, September 24 2016: Shops, hotels and workshops are one primary factor for congestion along the narrow road which leads to Majorkhul from Khoyathong Sani Mandir road.

Notwith standing the fact that the road is quite narrow, j gas stoves and engines are repaired on both the adjoining footpaths and vehicles are parked just below the footpaths.

The road connected to the Khoyathong Sani Mandir- Majorkhul road is quite dilapidated and muddy.

Apart from mud and dirt which cover the road surface, parking of vehicles along the road has been causing untold misery to the commuters and the public.

Residents and shop owners have been using the road according to their fancy and whims.

Same is the case with Kalibari road too and there is no traffic regulation on these roads.Traffic congestion along Singjamei road has eased considerably after the road was expanded to the status of a six-lane road (three lanes on either side).

The lane on either side has been converted into parking lots.

The number of vehicles parked along roads is likely to increase if the fast multiplying number of private vehicles is any indication.

Commenting on the ongoing campaign of The Sangai Express on traffic congestion and traffic management in Imphal city, one Sinam Robert of Lairikyengbam Leikai said that majority of the people do not know traffic rules prop- erly.

He then expressed keen desire for the authorities concerned to take up extensive awareness programmes so that people understand traffic rules.

He said that very few people understand the meanings of zebra crossings, oneway system etc.

It would be quite beneficial if printed traffic rules are given to the people at the time of vehicle registration and/or issuance of driving licences.

Police training programmes should also have a course on traffic rules, Robert said.

Inconveniences caused by TCP and Motor Vehicle personnel in the course of their drive against twowheeler riders who do not wear helmets can be reduced if helmets are made mandatory while buying/selling two-wheelers, he added.
