Driver involved in fatal Kakching mishap held

Kakching police have arrested the driver of the Swift Dzire car involved in the hit and run accident which led to the death of an 18 year old individual from Kakching on the night of January 14 .
The arrested driver has been identified as SS Bungtha (30) s/o SS Kosing (village chief) of Mantripantha village, Chandel.
Following the accident, violence erupted in Kakching yesterday morning as the people tried to storm Kakching police station demanding the arrest of the involved individual (s) resulting in a standoff with the police.
To bring the situation under control, Kakching District Administration imposed 144 Cr PC in the area covered by Kakching Municipal area of Kakching town under Kakching sub division from 7.30 pm yesterday.
During the standoff, the police fired several tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the irate crowd.
The wind shields of three police vehicles were reportedly damaged after being hit by the stones pelted by the angry locals.
A personnel of Kakching police station was also reportedly injured during the incident yesterday.
On the other hand, a joint meeting of district police District Administration and a representatives of the locals, was held at the office chamber of DIG Range 2, K Radhashyam, today.
According to reliable source, the representative has agreed to claim the dead body of the youth tomorrow from JNIMS morgue after necessary post mortem is conducted.
Although, life returned to normal in the district following the arrest of the driver of the Swift Dzire car involved in the accident, a number of security personnel have been deployed at various locations as security measures to prevent any untoward incident.
18 individuals, who were arrested by the police in connection with yesterday's violence, were also released today.
It may be mentioned that the 18 year old youth.
Khumukcham Jetlee s/o Kh Mangi of Kakching Khullen Moirangthem Leikai, died after being struck down by the speeding car at around 9.30 pm of January 14, while he along with his friend Basker were pushing their broken down scooter near Heikrakpokpi power sub-station.
