Imphal, May 12 2010: The 27 Sector Assam Rifles today hosted a seminar on "Role of NGOs and Community based Organizations in Peace and Development" at Churachandpur as part of its endeavor to promote peace and development in the region.

The seminar was organized with the objective of providing an open platform for the district intelligentsia to share their thoughts in bringing about peace & development in the society, PIB Defense Wing said in a statement.

Major General D S Hooda, GOC 57, Mountain Division was about to grace the function as chief guest of the inaugural function of the seminar.

However due to bad weather conditions, he was unable to attend the event, the statement added.

Several Govt officials social scientists, NGO heads, journalists, educationists, community leaders and youth leaders spoke on different aspects encompassing the topic.

Brigadier Surendra Mehta, Commander 27 Sector Assam Rifles welcomed the guests and conveyed that purpose of hosting the seminar was to explore prospect of peace and development contributions of NGOs and CBOs by hearing diverse opinions and view point on the issues besieging the state and specifically Churachandpur district.

In his keynote address, he pointed out that the many government sponsored schemes and said the success of such schemes is based on the activity and campaign done by various NGOs & CBOs in order to ensure better implementation of the scheme.

In the first session Dr Shingkhozam Hauzel, CMO Churachandpur introduced the theme "Contribution of NGOs and community based organizations towards achieving and maintaining peace" .

He enunciated that these organizations had a significant role to play in the prevailing scenario in Manipur.

Esther Gangte, lecturer, Churachandpur College dwelt on the specifics of "Activities Manifesting peace in an area." The second speaker of the first session, Rev Khen P Tombing, Principal Rayburn College, Ccpur deliberated on "Role of youth and Church organizations for lasting peace".

Being a reverend and an educationist Rev Khen spoke on the vastness of role, which can be played by these organizations.

He lauded the initiative of the Assam Rifles and said that it was for the first time in the history of Churachandpur that a seminar for peace and development was organized by the security forces.

He also highlighted the requirement of holding a peace camp.

The second session with the theme "Education Road Map to peace and development saw a major contribution from the audience and was highly interactive.

J Lhungdim, Planning Advisor, NEC set the ball rolling by introducing the theme.

The first speaker, Dr John Pulamte, Ex President ATSUM who had also delivered a talk at the seminar held at Leimakhong in the month of March, deliberated on "Community involvement in strengthening Govt efforts in infrastructure development".

Dr Dallian Haokip, Principal Bluestar Academy spoke on "A holistic look on role of NGOs in the spread of quality education".

An eminent educationist of Ccpur, enunciated how NGOs can enhance the spread of quality education.

The interactive portion of the session served a welcome platform for the audience to voice their opinion on the subject.
