NDRF ASI engaged in Dzuko fire fight dies, CM condoles

Senapati, January 05 2021: An Assistant Sub-Inspector of NDRF who was deployed to tackle the wildfire at Dzuko valley was found dead in a tent this morning.

He was reportedly on duty till last evening at the base camp.

Reports said that he had no complaints of health complications till yesterday but was found dead early this morning in the tent where the NDRF, SDRF and State police personnel reportedly slept, some 13-14 kms away from Mao Police Station.

The corpse was brought to Senapati District Hospital where a condolence service was held.

Later, he was taken to JNIMS for post mortem.

L Dikho, Minister PHED, L Kailun, ADGP, DC, Senapati, SP Senapati, CMO Senapati, CSOs including the Naga People's Organization (NPO), Senapati District Women's Association (SDWA) and Senapati District Students Association (SDSA) offered wreaths and prayer at District Hospital, Senapati before sending the mortal remains to Imphal for post mortem and final rites at his native home in Imphal.

The cause of the death is still not known till the time of filing this report.

The deceased has been identified as one Nongthombam Binoy Meitei (40) S/o Ibochouba from Luwangsangbam Maning Leikai.

He joined SSB in 1999 and was serving in the NDRF on deputation.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has expressed shock and deep sorrow over the death of ASI Nongthombam Binoy Meetei of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), who was deployed at Dzuko for the ongoing firefighting operation.

The Chief Minister was attending a foundation stone laying function of different projects at Bishnupur Bazar when he conveyed the news to the gathering.

He requested the gathering to observe a minute's silence with him to pay respect to the departed soul.

Saying that Binoy, whose dedication to duty and zeal for accomplishing objectives were exceptional, died in the line of duty, the CM added that his work and sacrifice for the State will ever remain as an inspiration to his fellow citizens.

If not controlled on time, Dzuko wildfire could create huge environmental impact destroying vast areas of forest cover, wildlife and their habitats and thousands of plant species having precious medicinal values, he added.

Binoy was a dedicated member of the group, who camped at two different base camps braving the cold winter at high altitudes, continued N Biren and expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

He also prayed that the departed soul may rest in peace.
