Imphal, November 19 2024:
Manipur Drivers' Association (MDA) and associated organisations have welcomed the restriction on movement of heavy vehicles carrying goods exceeding 30 tons in weight along the Imphal-Dimapur Road (NH-2) .
The 30 tons does not include the vehicle's weight.
It may be noted that Kohima Deputy Commissioner, Additional SP Traffic Control Police, Southern Angami Peoples Organisation and Southern Angami Youth Organisation had imposed the restriction from October 8 onwards.
Sanjay Kshetrimayum, general secretary, MDA made the statement today during a press briefing held at MDA Office in Kwakeithel.
Citing frequent plying of overloaded goods trucks along the National Highway, he said that it not only damages the roadways but increases the frequency of unfortunate incidents.
He said that Senapati District Truck Drivers' Union, Senapati District Truck Owners' Association, Dimapur District Truck Drivers' Welfare Trade Union and Akhiya Barak Transport have also welcomed the restriction of movement of vehicles with goods exceeding 30 tons in weight in the Dimapur to Mao stretch of NH-2 .
The MDA general secretary has urged truckers to adhere to the restriction while cautioning that MDA and other associated organisations will not bear the responsibility for any trucker flouting the restriction and overloading their vehicles.
Further, he made an appeal against intimidating transporters plying along the highways and called upon the relevant authority to address traders hiking prices due to blockades along the National Highway.
