Scheme Importance of developing indigenous handicraft sector highlighted

Imphal, November 15 2022: A 2-day Regional level workshop and seminar under Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana (AHVY) Scheme was inaugurated today at Hotel Tampha, North AOC.

The programme is jointly organised by the North Eastern Regional Office, Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, Guwahati and the Handicrafts Service Centre, Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, Imphal.

The inaugural function was graced by G Shanti Devi, Shilp Guru Awardee; Hara Kanta Baro, Deputy Director (Design), Weavers Service Centre, Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, Imphal; Meisnam Lalini Devi, National Awardee; B Mili, Senior Assistant Director (H), NERO, Guwahati and Mutum Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Assistant Director (H), Handicrafts Service Centre, Imphal as the presidium members.

Handicrafts Pehchan identity cards were distributed to the artisans during the programme.

The programme is being attended by around 100 artisans, staff and officers of various Government departments along with the stakeholders concerned.

Mutum Sanjeev Kumar Singh while emphasizing on the purpose of the programme, said that it has been organised to sensitize the artisans in the State about the various projects and schemes of Development Commissioner, Handicrafts to ensure that they avail the benefits of such programmes for the development of Handicrafts sector.

He continued that the programme will educate the artisans about the platforms such as e-commerce, marketing, web portals etc to enhance the use of these platforms for the extensive promotion and sale of their products to customers across the country and abroad.

Such measures will help in generating income and improve the economic and social status of these artisans, he added.

In view of the importance of seeking financial aid from the right sources, he said that the experts from banks will impart knowledge to the artisans on the terms, eligibility and benefits of loans and other financial schemes.

He also maintained that the relevant departments will extend all possible help to the artisans to boost the handicraft sector of the State and to generate a sustainable source of income out of it.

The resource persons and experts stressed on the need of promoting the indigenous handicraft products and to take help from various market sources for the same.
