World Wetlands Day observed

As observed across the globe, World Wetlands Day 2025 was celebrated today at the Seminar Hall of the Geography Department, Manipur University, Canchipur under the theme, "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future".
The event organised by the Department of Geography, Manipur University, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands, with a special focus on the wetlands of Manipur.
The celebration was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Prof N Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University; Prof S Jibonkumar Singh, Dean, Human & Environmental Sciences; Prof N Deva Singh, former Dean; and Prof Kh Pradipkumar Singh, Head, Geography Department.
A key highlight of the event was a special invited talk by Prof Th Binoy of the Department of Life Sciences, Manipur University, followed by an engaging interactive session on the conservation and management of wetlands, particularly in Manipur.
The discussions emphasized the ecological significance of wetlands, their role in biodiversity conservation, and the need for sustainable management practices.
The observance of World Wetlands Day 2025 at Manipur University served as a platform for meaningful dialogue on preserving these vital ecosystems and fostering a collective commitment to their protection.
Similarly, World Wetlands Day was also observed today at Mayang Imphal, Komlakhong Chingthi under the aegis of the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Manipur.
Tree plantation, painting competitions and students rally were the main highlights of the eVent, said a release issued by Manipur Innovation Society.
Tongbram Tejkumar, chief guest of the event, urged all the stakeholders, Government agencies, local communities and environmental organisations to come together and work towards a sustainable future for Loktak Lake and all wetlands across Manipur.
