Tata Company has assured the state transport department to provide the infrastructure for setting up a driver training school in the state.
The department has started processing to acquire 10 acres of land which the company requires to set up the school.
An official source today said that the Tata Company has given assurance for providing all the infrastructure and other require merits for setting up the driver training school which the state transport department is proposing.
The company agreed to supply computer vehicle, two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles of different brands which would be required to impart training under an agreement between the state transport department and the Tata Company.
While the company will provide the infrastructure, the transport department will allocate land required for the school, the official said.
In Manipur, except privately run driving training schools, the government has not set up any such school.
When the school comes up, it will be compulsory to obtain a certificate endoising that the person concerned had passed the driving training course when applying for a driving license to be issued by the state transport department.
The state transport department has issued driving licence to over 2,86,989 persons.
As per rule, a person has to obtain a learner card before issuing a driving licence.
The department has also started issuing smart card driving licences.
The official source also said that as of March 31, 2010 the total number of two-wheeler vehicles registered with the transport department is 1,03,099, the number is 8,678 for three-wheeler and 30,096 four-wheelers including both heavy and light vehicles.
During the year 2009-10, transport department collected Rs 6,57,78,000 as vehicles tax against the targeted achievement of Rs 5,62,39,419 .
