Belief Narratives International Symposium underway

Imphal, February 07, 2012: The Belief Narratives International Symposium co hosted by Department of English and Department of Manipuri, Manipur University in association with International Society of Folk Narrative Research (ISPNR) began Monday at the Court Hall and Committee Room of the Administrative Block of Manipur University.

In the prorgamme held at the Court Room today, William Westerman talked on Narratives of Justice and Injustice-Political Belief as Genre and Sub-Genre; Samuel Dani on Duma-A Study on the Belief Narrative of Dalit Community in Odisha; Valentina Punzi on The Cult of Amyes Bya Khyung Mountain in the Oral Narratives of Regbing Area (Qinghai, PRC); Khusi Pattanayak on Reading the Friend of a Friend Tale-An Attempt at Decoding the Structure of Urban Legend; Sanghamitra Choudhury on Folklore Myths-A Study of Masan Thakur of Western Assam, India; D Kuolie on Belief Narratives in Respect of Tenyimia Community of Nagaland; Ch Sheelaramani on Revisiting the Hopi Belief Narratve-Louis L'amour,s the Haunted Mesa and Nipuni Mao on Everything Happens for a Reason.

The programme was facilitated by Mark Bender of Department of East Asian Languages and Literaures, The Ohio State University USA and K Sobita, Director Arts and Culture, Manipur.

While in the Committee Room, Sanjukta Naskar talked on Myth and the Ritual Tale-An Analysis of the Tale and Ritual of Shiva; Kh Ranibala on Emoinu and Phunga Lairu-A Belief of Every Meetei; Somingam Mawon on Traditional Relegion of the Tangkhul Nagas; Sarat Kumar Jena on Building Global Legends on Local Legend-Retelling of Folklore, Myth and Religion in Brihat Katha, Katha Saritsagar, the Transposed Heads and Hayavadana; L Birjita on Beliefs Associated with the Distribution of Kabok- A Ritual of Moirang; Gaganjyoti Bora on Belief Narratives of the Pati Rabhas; Faguna Barmahalia on Bardwisikhla-A Narrative of the Season and Sarmistha De Base on A Sructural Analysis of Manipuri Legend and the Folk Motifs of its Contemporary World.

The programme was facilitated by Merili Metsvahi of University of Tartu and Prof S Sanatombi of Manipur University.

Representatives from different Indian and foreign Universities are attending the symposium.

The event will conclude tomorrow with a formal valedictory function at the Court Hall.

After the function, the representatives of the different universities will visit Kangla and Ima Keithel in the afternoon.
