Imphal, August 19 2024:
Reacting strongly to the press statement of Zeliangrong United Committee Manipur Valley (ZUCMV) which was published on August 17, 2024 in some local daily papers, the Kabui Union Manipur (KUM) has accused the ZUCM of misleading the people by claiming that the Kabui and Rongmei are one and the same tribe.
In a release, KUM asserted that the Kabui community, as one of the ancient and distinct communities of the State, possesses its unique culture and religion, which are not subsumed under any other nomenclature.
KUM highlighted that the Kabui community was included in the Scheduled Tribes list in 1950 under the sole designation Kabui while the Rongmei tribe was recognised separately in the Scheduled Tribes list in 2012 .
"The Union Government has officially acknowledged Kabui and Rongmei as distinct tribes", said KUM while adding that the contradictory statements made by ZUCM goes against the Constitution of India.
Further, KUM appealed to all the people/ organisations to refrain from making baseless statements and respect the unique identity of the Kabui community.
