Imphal, March 03 2025:
Poirei Apunba Leimarol Meira Paibi (PALEM) has cautioned that the public may choose to take action against those who aid in the arrest of village volunteers.
Speaking to media persons at PALEM office located in Nongada Mayai Leikai, Imphal East, Bimolata Mongjam, president, PALEM said that due to the failure of the Central and State security forces in performing their duties, there was an increase in the death toll and loss of properties after violence broke out on May 3, 2023 .
At this juncture, many youths abandoned their jobs and took on the role of village volunteers in vulnerable foothill areas to protect the lives and properties of common citizens.
Without their contribution, the State might have completely fallen apart, she said.
Calling for collective public effort to stop the arrest of village volunteers, Bimolata Mongjam demanded immediate cessation of combing operations carried out in different parts of the State.
She went on to compare the individuals who assisted in the arrest of village volunteers to Subedar Khelendra who played a role in the arrest of Yuvraj Tikendrajit Singh.
Bimolata Mongjam cautioned that the public might choose to hold these individuals accountable for their actions if they are ever found.
She also accused the Central forces of siding with a particular community and claimed that their deployment in Manipur is not an attempt to resolve the conflict.
Representatives of various meira paibi groups were present at the press briefing.
