IPAK sets record straight, rejects Prof Shyamo's claim

Imphal, August 01 2016: Indigenous People's Association of Kangleipak (IPAK) has said that they do not have any intention to level charges against former JNIMS Director Prof M Shyamo.

They simply brought Shyamo's wrongdoings to light in the interest of the public, the civil society organisation claimed.

Speaking at a press conference held at their Keishampat office, IPAK general secretary (organisation) Premkumar Pebam said that Prof Shyamo served JNIMS as the Director from October 1, 2013 to April 27, 2015 .

During his tenure as the Director, Prof Shyamo acquired 40 bed side monitors through an Imphal based firm, he said.

Premkumar said that as per the documents available at IPAK office, Prof Shyamo issued sanction order of Rs 2,49,500 per unit to the firm although the market price of the bed side monitor is only Rs 39,000 per unit.

It means that Prof Shyamo issued a total sanction order of Rs 1,13,27,300 to acquire these 40 bed side monitors although it could be bought with only Rs 16 lakhs, Premkumar said.

Luckily, the final payment of this sanction order is yet to be made to the said firm and JNIMS authority must immediately stop the bill process, he said.

In another instance of financial irregularity, Premkumar revealed, Prof Shyamo acquired an HPLC Poison Detector Machine at an inflated rate.

He said that this machine is currently installed at the Department of Forensic Medicine of the medical institute.

Premkumar said that although the market price of the machine was Rs 22,53,563, Prof Shyamo bought it at Rs 72,87,787 giving a loss of around Rs 50 lakh to the State-run medical institute.

As such, there is no point of levelling charges against Prof Shyam but simply expose his financial irregulataries, Premkumar said.

Documents in support of his claims were also distributed to the reporters at the press conference.
