ZORO urges UN intervention for protection of human rights in Myanmar
Source: The Sangai Express

Kangpokpi, May 31 2021: The Zo Re-unification Organisation (ZORO), General Headquarters, Aizawl, has pleaded for the intervention of the United Nations over the protection of human rights of indigenous people in Myanmar.

A memorandum in this regard was submitted to the Chairperson of United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, New York, and the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Geneva, on Saturday.

In the Memorandum, President of ZORO, Mr R Sangkawia, stated that the rights and human rights of the Chins in Chin State of Myanmar should be secured as per the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous People as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The actions of Tatmadaw upon the indigenous Chin people echoed the inhumane and heartless nature of the military junta which amounted to breaches of international human rights laws, he said and demanded that the SAC must end their siege against the people of Mindat and end their occupation at once.

He maintained that the civilians are in need of medicines and humanitarian aid.

So, let the appropriate relief materials be provided without delay to gravely exploit indigenous people of Mindat and other parts of Chin State to save innocent lives, he asserted.

The memorandum seeks to represent the suffering meted out against the people of Mindat, a town in the Chin State of western Myanmar following the coup d'etat of February 1, 2021 and the subsequent conflict between the Myanmar Tatmadaw (military junta) and the ethnic minorities.

The ZORO, representing the Zo ethnic tribes in different parts of the World, stands in solidarity with their brethren in the Chin State of Myanmar during the present political crisis in Myanmar and voices out their concern regarding the inhumane, merciless, and violent activities of the Myanmar military junta against its ethnic minorities in its unlawful quest for power.

As the Myanmar military took over power on February 1, 2021, the people has voiced their dissent over the military junta and pressed for the return of democracy.

The military junta, in retaliation, has been using lethal force to suppress the peaceful protesters and the violence has spread across the country ceaselessly.

This is seen as an unlawful and violent campaign of the Tatmadaw to seize power in Myanmar.

The Chins in the Chin state of Myanmar are indigenous peoples.

Their indigenous rights and human rights, during the current Myanmar crisis, should be secured as per the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Sangkawia urged the SAC forces to end their siege against the people of Mindat and end their occupation at once.

Sangkawia further mentioned that the civilians are in need of medicines and humanitarian aid while adding that appropriate relief materials should be provided without delay to the gravely exploited indigenous people of Mindat and other parts of Chin State to save innocent lives.
