Imphal, January 02 2008:
Setting the record straight, the Newspaper Publishers' Forum, Manipur has today stated that since January 1 the distributors (hawkers) have stopped delivering newspapers over a disagreement on the commission paid to them.
In a statement, the Forum said that after the price of the newspapers (eight paged ones) was raised to Rs 3 per copy in the backdrop of the rising cost in production, the commission per paper was pegged at Re 1.This means that a newspaper with the stated price of Rs 3 is actually sold to the distributors at Rs 2 per copy.
The distributors have however rejected the suggestions of the Forum demanding more commission, said the statement and added that this is the reason why they stopped delivering newspapers.
Despite the stand of the distributors, all newspaper houses are functioning as usual, said the Forum and added it would be wrong on the part of the distributors to deny the right to information to the readers.
Readers who want a copy of their daily papers may collect the same from the newspaper offices, said the Forum and urged all not to stop the readers from buying the newspapers.
