Gorkha union stages protest

Demanding re-introduction of Panchayati Raj system, people of Kanglatongbi and Kalapahar today staged a twin protest demonstration.
The twin protest demonstration participated by people of five erstwhile Gram Panchayats were staged under the aegis of the All Manipur Gorkha Union.
The agitation was also supported by the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh, Manipur State Nepali Parishad, All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union and the Reformist Students' Front Manipur.
Speaking about their agitation, All Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union secretary Khadga Bahadur Tamang said that Panchayat polls of 2007 was held only in Kanglatongbi Gram Panchayat because of threats from some quarters.
The election was not held in Koubru Leikha, Kalapahar, Santalabari-Parishine and Turibari GPs.
After a petition was filed at the High Court same year, the Court issued a directive to hold election in the said GPs within six months but the Court directive was not complied.
Later, by an executive decision of the State Government, Kanglatongbi ZP was attached to Khurkhul S/C ZP .
Saying that district administrations of Senapati and Imphal West have been shirking responsibility when it comes to issuance of residential certificates and other documents, KB Tamang demanded re-introduction of Panchayati Raj system in the five erstwhile Gram Panchayats at the earliest.
