Imphal, May 07 2018:
DESAM volunteers confronted the police today when the latter tried to prevent irate volunteers of the students' organisation from storming and locking the office of the Directorate of Education (S) at Lamphelpat.
DESAM volunteers were protesting against the State Government's alleged failure to enforce its own recent transfer and posting orders with respect to Education Department on account of undue interference by Ministers and MLAs.
Scuffles broke out both inside and outside the premises of the Directorate.
Police personnel who were present near the entrance of the directorate tried to thwart the DESAM volunteers' attempt to enter and storm the premises of the directorate.

However, many of the DESAM volunteers managed to enter the premises and later locked up the Directorate's main entrance from inside.
They broke the doors of some of the rooms inside the office building as they were locked from inside the room.
A few minutes later, many police personnel managed to enter the office building from other gates and they prevented the DESAM volunteers from further vandalising the office but this was preceded by a long scuffle between the two sides.
The police team also caned some of the students.
Speaking to media persons later, DESAM general secretary Sheetal Oinam decried that, the transfer and posting orders for teachers which was issued a few days back cannot be implemented till today as numerous DO letters from Ministers and MLAs have been given/submitted to the Directorate of Education (S) to revoke the transfer orders of their near and dear ones.
He added that the transfer and posting orders for some teachers have been already cancelled even before they reached their new places of posting.
The present Government has been contradicting its own claim that it is against corruption, nepotism and favouritism as its MLAs and Ministers have worked in favour of their near and dear ones by sidelining the interest of the public and students of the State, he alleged.
Maintaining that the transfer and posting orders were issued in view of the shortage of teachers in some schools of both the hills and valley, Sheetal conveyed that DESAM decided to lock up the office building of the Directorate of Education (S) as the students organization felt that there is no use of opening it if it can no longer perform its duty.
He urged the Government not to interfere and play politics in the education sector so that it (the education sector) can be kept as a sanctum sanctorum.
He added that DESAM will carry on their campaign to make education sector a disturbance free zone.
