Jiribam, July 19 2024:
Extending their gratitude to Assam Police for safeguarding the Meitei people in Jiribam against violent attacks, the Jiri Apunba Lup (JAL), Jiribam has requested relevant authorities of Assam to take more stringent measures to apprehend illegal armed groups organized in collusion with militants from Manipur in Cachar district.
A press release issued by JAL has expressed suspicion that "the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar group is planning to further attack the innocent Meitei people of Jiribam, in collusion with well-organised armed groups from outside Manipur, specifically Cachar District of Assam" citing the press condemnation issued on July 17 by Indigenous Tribes Advocacy Committee (ITAC) Pherzawl and Jiribam Districts.
Reiterating their suspicions, JAL said that future attacks on the Meitei people of Jiribam by other more organized armed militants might be potentially justified under the guise of self defense or other reasons.
JAL also pointed out that for over a year since violence broke out on May 3, 2023 in Manipur, the Meitei people of Jiribam have patiently co-existed with the Kuki people as a peace loving community.
Specifically in Jiribam district, Meiteis never attacked any community so far in view of peaceful co-existence, said JAL.
But the peace in Jiribam was shattered when an innocent Meitei man S Sarat Singh of Gularthol was brutally killed on May 6 by Kuki militants.
Additionally, the recent killing of one CRPF personnel by Kuki-Zomi-Hmar armed militants at Mongbung village incident in Jiribam is also clear evidence of their illegal activities, alleged JAL.
Thus, JAL has urged the concerned authorities in Assam to take stringent measures to round up illegal armed groups working with militants from Manipur in Cachar district and eradicate terrorist activities in the country.
