Imphal, June 05 2022: As observed across the globe, 'World Environment Day' was celebrated across the State today under the theme 'Only One Earth' by various organisations to raise awareness on the importance of conserving, preserving and protecting the environment.

Plantation of saplings, cleanliness drive, organising essay and painting competitions were the main highlights of World Environment Day observation in the State.

World Environment Day-2022, was observed today, at the Office of Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur by planting tree saplings at its office premises by Dr Rajesh Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary, Manipur, P Doungel, IPS, Director General of Police, Manipur, Rajesh Agrawal, IAS, Chief Electoral Officer, N Praveen Singh, IAS, Additional Chief Electoral Officer, other Officers and officials of CEO's Office, said a press release by the Joint Chief Electoral Officer.

Tree plantation was also carried out at the premises of the newly constructed EVM and VVPAT warehouses in all Electoral Districts of Manipur under the supervision of the respective District Election Officers. As a commitment towards conserving the environment, CEO's Office will move towards completely 'Single Usage Plastic Free Zone', power usage through solar energy, reduce dependence on paper work and promote eco-friendly work atmosphere in a time bound manner, added the release.

On this occasion, a plantation drive was held at Kangasi Ching, Nongpok Sanjenba, Khulen attended by TOM TV Editor, Ahongsangbam Mobi, The Sangai Express Manipuri Edition Editor Khogendra Khomdram, Associate Editor of Poknapham, Bijoy Kakchingtabam, Vice-president of United Committee Manipur, Y Dhiren, General Secretary GS Deva among others.

Around 300 saplings were planted in today's plantation programme.

Rotary Club of Imphal observed the day by distributing around 615 fruit bearing tree saplings to the customers at three petrol pumps in Imphal city namely Petrol Pump, North AOC, NRL, Khurai and JAS Gas, Uripok as a part of continuing community service project of Rotary Club of Imphal to save the environment.

The Mao-Poumai Baptist Church joined in observing the day with the sub-topic 'Caring for God's Creation'.

The Sunday School Children demonstrated a green parade with the slogan of 'Eco Care' followed by distribution of saplings to all the worshippers to plant for the promotion of green environment.

In connection with the green Sunday, the Church also organised and essay competition and painting competition.

Sangai Foundation, Sega Road Thouda Bhabok Leikai in association with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Govt of Manipur planted saplings at different places of Keishamthong Assembly Constituency today on the occasion of World Environment Day.

The members of Sangai Foundation also carried out a cleanliness drive at Pishum Oinam Leikai where the bust of Hijam Irabot is erected and planted saplings at the surrounding areas.

MAHUD Minister Yumnam Khemchand and Managing Director of UNACCO, N Irabanta led a plantation drive at UNACCO Residential School, Chanung in Imphal East district today where around 50 Date Palm trees and saplings of other fruit bearing trees were planted.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Manipur celebrated the day focusing on "Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature" .

M Joy Singh, Commissioner Art and Culture, MAHUD and Agriculture, Government of Manipur while speaking as the chief guest of the programme highlighted that time has come to rethink for reviving and rejuvenating the earth and emphasized on the need of rethinking on what can be given back to the nature and the earth instead of what can be extracted from it.

Dr I.Meghachandra Singh, Joint Director, ICAR Manipur Centre stressed that tree plantation and afforestation is one of the most effective means to combat climate change and global warming for future generations in view of the rapidly degrading environmental conditions.

As a part of the programme, trees were planted in the campus and Langol Hill farm.

Staff of ICAR Manipur centre and KVK Imphal West participated in the programme.

Manipur Technical University's Innovation Council, IIC MTU also observed the day at the university campus.

As a part of the observation T-shirts were distributed, an expert talk by Nongmaithem Anand, Assistant Professor (MTU) was held and tree plantation and spreading of awareness on proper plastic waste was carried out at Wahengbam Leikai Bus Parking.

As an initiative to promote afforestation and rejuvenate the earth, scientists, students and staffs from various departments of Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) Imphal under the leadership of Professor Pulok K Mukherjee, Director, IBSD planted around 150 fruit bearing plants in the Bioresources Park of IBSD at Haraorou today.

The College of Agriculture (CoA), Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal organised a sapling plantation programme at the Central Farm of CAU Imphal at Lamphelpat led by Vice-Chancellor of the CAU, Dr Anupam Mishra today in connection with World Environment Day observation.

The programme was also attended by Professor Indira Sarangthem, Dean, CoA, CAU, Imphal, Dr S Basanta Singh, Director of Instruction, Professor Ph.Ranjit Sharma, Director of Extension Education, Professor K Mamocha Singh, Registrar, Dr Ngangkham Joykumar Singh, Dean, College of Food Technology, faculty member, staff and students of the varsity.

To observe the day, Democratic Students' Alliance Of Manipur (DESAM), Imphal East District Council organised a cycle rally.

The cycle rally was flagged off by Wangkhei AC MLA, Thangjam Arunkumar from Lamlong Higher Secondary School which went till Pioneer Academy.

Also saplings were planted along the way with the help of the local clubs members.

As a part of the worldwide World Environment Day observation, Federal Students' Organisation Kangleipak (FESOK) in association with Modern College Environmental Club and IQAC Modern College organised a painting competition today.

The painting competition was conducted in three categories under the theme 'Only One Earth' and around 1400 students participated in the said competition.

Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Nature Club, Haoreibi, Forest and Environment Development Organisation (FEDOM), Manipur and Phayeng Apunba Umang Committee, Ideal Club, Tera Keithel, Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA), Adventure Academy of Manipur (ADAM), District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Imphal West, the Lilong Haoreibi College Environmental Club, NSS Units I, II and III, NCC and YRC along with Lilong Haoreibi College Alumni Association, LEISHU, Kangleipak Bonsai Association, Tentha in association with World Paint Art Green, Celin Digital, Environmental Protection Society, Awang Sekmai in collaboration with doctors of Community Health Centre, Awang Sekmai, the Kangla Accupressure, Alternative Therapy, Treatment Research & Training Centre and the Yoga Nature Cure Accupressure, Alternative Therapy & Research Centre, the Manipur State Scouts Union, Kumbi Ideal Youth Development Organisation (KIYDO) in association with Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), Bishnupur, the Youths' Cultural and Welfare Organisation (YCWO) and the DM College of Science Alumni, 95-98 Batch in association with the Heinoupok Tenant Farming Co-operative Society and Heinoupok Women Welfare Association, Apunbagee Thouna (a village level federation) Sanjenbam in collaboration with CSOs, AMSU, village stake holders, youth clubs, Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission, Department of Panchayati Raj under the aegis of Central Forest Division Department, Govt of Manipur and 100 NCC cadets of RUDA Academy, Thoubal also joined in observing World Environment Day by organising plantation drive at different locations.
