SKY hospital performs open heart surgery on 22-month old boy

In yet another remarkable feat, Sky Hospital and Research Centre successfully conducted an open heart surgery on 22-month old boy.
Briefing media persons at the hospital, chairman of Sky Hospital Dr Shyamkishore Lairikyengbam said that patient Master Prince s/o M Shantakumar of Khundrakpam Awang Leikai Imphal was born with a hole in the heart, also referred to as congenital heart defect.
Without surgical closure of the hole, life expectancy of the child is very low, he said.
Dr Ajay Kual, Senior Consultant, CTVS Surgeon, HOD and Chairman, Cardiac Surgery, BLK Hospital, New Delhi and also the visiting Senior Heart Surgeon of Sky Hospital along with a team of specialist surgeon of Sky Hospital successfully performed the operation on May 14, chairman of Sky Hospital Dr Shyamkishore informed.

When asked about the life expectancy of the child after the surgery, he said the patient can now lead a normal life.
While Dr Ajay expressed that children born with heart defects have limited life expectancy therefore early diagnosis and treatment are must.
"We must make sure that children get early diagnosis for such defects and are treated at an early stage to ensure they get to live like any other normal and healthy children," Dr Ajay said.
He further said that infrastructure and machineries of Sky Hospital is of International standards.
Therefore, the hospital can provide cardiac surgery to patients not only from the State but also from other neighbouring States of the North East region at an affordable cost.
He added that mechanisms where school going children could be screened for congenital heart defects at an early stage and provide timely treatment should be introduced.
Even though such surgery is among the most complex operations, the surgery is 100 percent curable if operated at the right time by expert surgeons.
Dr Shyamkishore said the patient is recuperating well and will be discharged after a week.
